When we were in Tokyo in June, we passed through a shopping area and I saw a display of flowers that caught my eye. I thought they were artificial flowers at first because they seemed so unusual.
The corms of Sandersonia aurantiaca contain levels of the toxic alkaloid colchicine comparable to those in Gloriosa superba, another very poisonous plant belonging to the family Colchicaceae.
I think that sign for the flower says Sandersonia with a Japanese accent.

I actually have seen what were called Chinese Lanterns, but as I remember they had a closed look. I do like the exotic look of these, but I would be afraid to have them around seeing how poisonous they are.
ReplyDeleteSo many poisonous plants! We have Chinese Lanterns here, similar to these.
ReplyDeleteThey're very pretty, but (even if I could find them) probably not for my house.
ReplyDeletePoisonous yet so pretty, ooh. -Christine cmlk79.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteI have never seen them before but a quick search shows that I can buy seeds to plant some of my own.
ReplyDeleteThey are magical! I've seen lanterns but not ones that are open on the bottom like that.
ReplyDeleteLovely! I bet Linda's Letters knows about them.
ReplyDeleteNope, this Linda has never heard of them or seen them. Unusual and very pretty. Just don't nibble. :-)
ReplyDeleteThey do look very pretty, I've not seen one before.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Not familiar to me with my limited background with plants.
ReplyDeleteThey are very pretty, even if a bit on the toxic side. I suspect that is if they are eaten, right? Just looking at them should be okay. :-)
ReplyDeleteVery pretty flower.
ReplyDeleteThey really do look like lanterns. If I understand the info correctly, it seems that one kind of them have a poisonous corm; isn't that the big root bulb underground? If they're safe, I bet your Mom could grow them alongside of the orchids. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteI just looked it up. It’s a perennial so I’m afraid it can’t grow in Hawaii.
DeleteOops! It’s me, Kay.
DeleteNew to me.
