The day after we arrived in Chicago, our daughter, Tiffany said she needed to go out to get her bag of unknown pastry goodies from the Great Harvest Bread Company. She explained that the bakery would give out assorted day-old bread or pastries for just $6.00 to prevent food waste.
I thought that was a really fun idea. Tif liked the mystery of never knowing for sure what you'd get and yes, you sure can't beat the price.
Off she went and returned with this assortment of interesting items.
We tasted the Monkey Bread which reminded us of their Apple Scrapple which we used to love when the kids were growing up.
I asked if they sold these bags every day and she said there was an app called Too Good to Go that would post when things would be available.
Well....
I wondered if Hawaii had a Great Harvest Bread Co. and WOW! We do have one in Kahala and one in Kailua.
However their menus are very different. There's no Monkey Bread or Apple Scrapple in Hawaii.
Ah well...
We'll wait until we're back in Chicago again.
Then again, I'll bet Art would like to try that kulolo muffin.

It was fun to spend time with your daughter.
ReplyDeleteLooks like there's only one in Missouri, and that's on the other side of the state.
ReplyDeleteKay, in answer to your question about the plaque for Washington Irving in the Alhambra, he was there! He wrote a book Tales of the Alhambra. Of course it didn't look like what we saw because it was in terrible shape at that time. I think I read that he raised interest in restoring the area.
ReplyDeleteThe pastries look good -Christine cmlk79.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of getting day-old donuts coming home from church in the 70s and maybe also the early 80s. They were a buck a bag and seemed fresh after a little nuking.
ReplyDeleteBack when I was a young man, there used to be a bread factory here in town and to go with it was a store called the "Day Old Bakery". I remember going in there whenever we came to town to load up on day old bread that didn't get sold. Mom would freeze it for a later date.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a good system for avoiding waste.
ReplyDeleteHow fun to get a bag of goodies a good price that might have been wasted. A win win for all ! We have a Great Harvest Bread Company where I live near Philadelphia.
ReplyDeleteIt reminds me of a person who worked at a bread factory. I once told him I was practically addicted to bread, to wich he replied : one day at the bread factory and you'll never ever wish to eat bread again. I think he was probably alluding to sanitary issues.
ReplyDeleteWe have a GHBC here in Bellingham. I don't go there too often because it's all incredibly tasty... and fattening. :-)
ReplyDeleteI would love to get surprised by breads and pastries although my waistline wouldn't appreciate it so much! There is very little that I wouldn't like on that menu. I do have a bit of an issue with high fiber stuff. TMI?
ReplyDeleteI checked to see if there was such a place around here. None in the San Joaquin Valley. Probably just as well...we have so many great bakeries and I get wonderful things from so many places in our neighborhood that I really don't need another, but that $6 bag sounded like a super idea.
ReplyDeleteHow delightful that you got to be with them. I'm so happy. By the way. I'm feeling much, much better and I appreciate your advice and support. Aloha!
ReplyDeleteWould you believe I was at the optometrist who tried a new virtual reality headset on me to check my peripheral vision? When He took it off, I got a terrible vertigo attack. Good grief! I now carry meclizine with me all the time. I was able to quickly take it. They let me rest a bit until things calmed down and continued with my appointment. The other optometrist who I also love told me she ALSO suffered from vertigo and had to do the Epley Maneuver 3xday for 6 months. So it's not over for me. Sigh...
DeleteWe love bread... and buy fresh made sourdough every Saturday at Wholefoods. Sourdough bread is not gluten free, but for some reason is well tolerated by those on gluten free diets. I checked out The Great Harvest Bread Company and there is not one close to us, but several in Texas. And I'm another who hates to waste food... thank goodness our ferals are glad to take almost all of our leftovers.
ReplyDeleteLike DJan, we have them here, but I avoid bakeries because they are too tempting and we don't need those calories.
ReplyDeleteI immediately looked to see if we had such a store. Boo Hoo ! We don't.
ReplyDeleteThat would be fun. I have never tasted monkey bread or apple scrapple. We have a store a few miles away. I am glad it’s a few miles away 😊 I will have to check it out next time we visit the area. The app is a great idea.
ReplyDeleteHere's a very quick and easy 'recipe' for monkey bread. I have never heard it called monkey brains, but ignore that. https://www.eatingonadime.com/monkey-brains-pull-apart-bread/
ReplyDeleteLin Floyd we have two Great Harvest Bread stores in our town...
ReplyDeleteWe have no good bakeries nearby. So sad, but also good for the weight issues.
ReplyDeleteI like plain soft bread and go to Brug Bakery for their delicious toast bread. SO delicious toasted and buttered, yum! Wednesdays are 10% for seniors. Day old bread is 20% off. I am not impressed with the Great Harvest Bread store in Kahala. Nice people but the bread is too fancy for me.
ReplyDeleteI'm hooked on your blog, Kay. This post is a great read. Thank you for sharing this good information about keeping food from spoiling and going to waste. Wishing you a wonderful and BLESSED week!
ReplyDeleteGreat blog
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea for an app. So many are experiencing food insecurity.
ReplyDeleteI can think of a bakery that does that with day old product.
