The other day, I was sitting here at the computer minding my own business trying to think of something to write about on my blog when I heard a distinctive buzzing in my ear. It was loud and the immediate reflex I had from growing up in the tropics was to slap my ear. Hard!
The buzzing stopped and I quickly rushed to my office door to lock that annoying, biting insect in the room so I'd be able to find him... I mean her. Only the females bite you.
This is from the CDC:
Only female mosquitoes bite people and animals to get a blood meal. Female mosquitoes need a blood meal to produce eggs. Mosquitoes get infected with germs, such as viruses and parasites, when they bite infected people and animals.
I hunted everywhere. I thought she might be hiding in dark areas under my bed. I couldn't hear anymore buzzing so I went back to my desk to entice her to try again.
That's when I saw her.
She was right next to the chair where I was sitting!
I couldn't believe it! Since she wasn't flattened or anything I thought she might just be stunned from my slap. I know my ear was stunned.
But no. The female vampire will no longer be around to suck anyone's blood. 😁
I'm surprised she wasn't squished at your ear. They are annoying. You had great reflexes to get her in one slap.

ReplyDeleteKay, Kudos on the first slap kill! You know when we were growing up in Louisiana, there were mosquitoes everywhere... but I don't remember worrying about them. Now (maybe because we know more about them carrying disease - ex: West Nile) we do worry. Our area is now fogged for mosquitoes and no one goes outside when they're really bad... without being covered in some sort of protective spray.
ReplyDeleteTry that with hearing aids. I am sending sympathy, as we get them all year round inside. They come in on the firewood, sleep and wake up hungry to search for the nearest ear.
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine put an end to one mosquito's life and then said, "That's no way to treat a lady."
ReplyDeleteWe do have mosquitos in the summer, but I am rarely bothered by them. In Colorado it was quite a different story! They would descend in clouds!

ReplyDeleteThat's an amazingly big mosquito. I hardly ever see them hear although sitting outside in summer among trees can bring them out.

ReplyDeleteEww. Ya gotta 'em. Okay. Maybe it came out of your computer, like a genuine computer bug. Groan... I didn't notice skeeters during my trips to Hawaii, but I did see sprayers working among the bushes outside my rental on Kauai. With so many feral roosters in other areas, I asked the sprayer if he was spraying against the roosters! The skeeters in Kansas are tan, a little big and leggy. I swat them if needed too. The biggest ones I've seen are in North Dakota. Linda in Kansas
