What to do With a Junky Watermelon

Art prides himself with getting a good, juicy, sweet watermelon.

Yes, he loves watermelon. 😋 He can't understand how anybody could not love watermelon. You can imagine how shocked he was when he discovered our daughter had developed an allergy to melons when she got older.

OK, so there we were at Costco when he saw a bunch of huge, heavy, beautiful watermelons and couldn't resist checking for that yellow spot on one side of the fruit and then tapping it for that perfect sound.

He brought it home, put it in the fridge to cool and then cut it.

It was a surprise to find that the watermelon had a very thick rind. I don't think we've ever seen watermelon with rind that thick.

It was a disappointment when we tasted it because it really wasn't very sweet at all.

In fact, it falls into the category of one of the worst watermelons we've ever bought.

What to do...

What to do...🤔

I suggested making it into a smoothie. We could add a little yogurt and maybe ice cream. However, since Art is a watermelon purist, he decided to just stick the watermelon in the blender and drink it as a very thick smoothie with no other ingredient added that might adulterate it.

And you know what?

It was pretty darn good. 😄 In fact, mom loved it.

So yay! That saved the day... or rather the watermelon. 😁

  1. It's gotten so I have a terrible time picking watermelon or canteloup - more than half the time they seem to be over ripe and spoiled tasting or just off tasting! Maybe something about the trip to market where I live? so I can feel for Art in this story.

  2. Good solution for you folk. I can tolerate a bit of watermelon, but I don't love it.

  4. We live about 100 miles away from a place that is know throughout the U.S. for their watermelons and so I usually wait until I know they are shipping before I even look for one. If we buy one too late in the season, after this place has shipped all theirs and so they are imported from who knows where, the odds are good we will get a junky watermelon like yours.

  5. Hello, Kay. I love watermelon! In my childhood, I would cool myself with the sweet, juicy watermelon cooled in the well water. My siblings and I competed how far we could spit seeds – one of my fond memories of summer. Thick watermelon juice sounds nice.

  6. I have no idea where that watermelon would have come from, but I'm sure it must have been on a very long boat ride and from another hemisphere. The melon has been genetically modified to create that thick rind. It helps keep the melon whole during that long boat ride and storage facility stay. Melons are starting to come from Mexico, but during the winter they were coming from Peru. I might buy a Mexico organic watermelon (I do not trust the watering systems in Mexico), but I'm sure not buying one that has been on a ship all the way from Peru. Are there any farms in Hawaii that grow melons? If so, those would be your best bet.

  7. I am not a watermelon fan, but I'll bet I would have loved your smoothie!

  8. The smoothie was a fantastic idea. If I get fruit that's not so great to eat, I will often cut it up and freeze for smoothies. I've never thought of doing it with watermelon but sounds like the results were worth it.

  9. Oh, I love watermelon, although they are getting a little pricey for us. But if you are close to Costco, they will gladly take anything you aren't satisfied with. That really doesn't help me, since we're 30 minutes from Costco and it wouldn't be worth the trip.

  10. Cut off the outer part and pickle the white rinds. My mom makes tsukemono out of these so you won’t be wasting them.

  11. I love watermelon but we have to take what comes here. Nothing better than a sweet watermelon.

  12. When I got a watermelon like yours with a thick rind is when I started figuring out what I could do with the white part. It turns out there are a lot of things.

  13. I really like a good sweet watermelon too. Reminds me of summers in the country when I was young... my cousin and I smashing a watermelon in the field and eating it. Then we would have a watermelon fight and rub it all over each other.

  15. Good for you. And I don't like watermellon.

  16. That was a clever use of it. Good for you!

  17. I only like watermelon if somebody else cuts it up in bite size pieces. Disappointing that it wasn't great, but you saved the day. You could have returned it to Costco - sounds terrible, right? I once saw a lady returning trays of eggs. I thought that was pretty brazen of her. Why buy so many in the first place?

  18. I have always wanted to like melons, but I hate them all. I could choke down watermelon if I had to (or if you paid me) but cantaloupe turns my stomach.

  19. I like watermelon, but it is only a seasonal thing here for me. They need to be field grown and ripened in late summer. Cold watermelon on a hot day!

  20. I would have never thought to make a smoothie. I am with Art. I love watermelon and it is a huge disappointment when they are bad. I usually toss them in a field in front of my house for the birds. I suspect watermelons can be a lot cheaper here in Georgia. When the season is in full swing, you can sometimes buy melons for $1 in Cordele the self proclaimed watermelon capital.
