Does bad luck really run in 3s?
I've been fighting lethargy and a bad tummy which is NOT fun. My doctor has ordered an ultrasound of my liver and more blood tests because he didn't like what he saw with my 3rd set of blood results. (This is Bad Luck #1.)
And then... would you believe mom was outside picking up leaves from a shedding roadway tree and she stubbed her toe? She managed to do it just outside of camera range so we have no idea how it happened.
When she walked in, I was in the middle of preparing cornbread so I asked Art to look at it. He looked at her toe closely and said..."Aaahhh... I don't think I can do this."
Ahhhh well the cornbread would have to wait. I looked at her toe, gasped and then we drove to Kaiser Emergency. Her toenail had completely lifted up and was just hanging on at the base.
The nurse who was checking us in asked whether she hit her head because there was blood on her temple.
We were so busy looking at her toe, it never occurred to us to look at her head. Good grief. I looked at her temple and yes... there was a little blood. I told the nurse that she must have touched her toe and then her head. He got a damp cloth and wiped off the blood.
Good grief! There WAS an injury. Sigh....
He chuckled and said it was his job to be an injury detective.
The doctor came and ordered scans of mom's head and feet. Everything was fine. She then said that there might be enough of the nail still attached to leave it as is!
"How do we care for this?" I asked her.
"Don't worry," said the doctor. "The nurse will be in to take care of it."
And yes, the nurse took care of it. She sprayed it with some kind of solution and through trial and error managed to get the nail covered. She also gave me some supplies to keep the nail protected. I love nurses.
(This is Bad Luck #2.)
Noooooo..... it felt like my tooth might have chipped ... or something.
But no, it wasn't just a chip. 😲 2/3 of my front tooth had just snapped off! It just snapped off!!! What the heck!
I made a call to the dentist who kindly fit me into her packed schedule to install a temporary tooth. She also gave me a referral for orthodontic care.
Sigh.... (And this is Bad Luck #3.)
I'm just hoping I don't get a #4.
Ooh, that doesn't sound very happy. Your mother's toe looks awful, the poor soul. I hope it heals quickly.

ReplyDeleteMy husband had the same tooth issue! He was eating some ICE CREAM and said "I broke my tooth in half!" I didn't believe him until I looked. And his was in the front, too. He had no pain preceding, but it turned out he had a cavity under a filling that turned into an abscess (with no pain) and that weakened the tooth and made it break. And we played the odds and don't have dental insurance. I can't even type what it cost for the original appointment, prescription co-pays, a root canal with a specialist, the first cap appointment where I paid half of that cost and the second cap appointment the first week of the next month. Grrrrr

Oh gosh Kay! That's too much. Hope the bloodwork docs can figure out what's happening. Ouch for Mom's toe, and yep, she took a good tumble if she hit her head too. Glad they checked her head too. Can you expand the camera range to cover her usual street sweeping areas. Maybe you can find evidence where she fell. Is there a broken pavement section that caused the fall? Or too low of blood pressure. You should have a pretty big bandaging box by now. I didn't know a tooth could just break like that! You need applesauce maybe. No more owies! You are done! ReplyDeleteKay of Musings: Thing is I don’t think she fell because there were no other injuries. I think it’s because she lost her balance and glanced her head against one of the supporting structures for the house on the way back to the house to show us her toe. The doctor is having me do an ultrasound on my liver and more blood tests this week. Sigh… And YES! I have two big boxes of medical supplies of every sort for every injury… Sigh…

ReplyDeleteFunny (not ha ha) thing, Kay, I've been fighting a bad tummy and fatigue also. Maybe it's in the air... or due to age? I do tend to have mild IBS, but haven't had an issue in a long time. Hopefully yours (and mine) will go away on its own. And so sorry about your mom's toe... and the tooth. I didn't know a tooth would do that. I imagine that was a shock. Well, take care. You could use some down time.

Kay of Musings: TWO?!? At one time?!? That’s totally amazing AND AWFUL! Problem is… I can see a crack going right up my other tooth! Arrrgghhh! I’ve had to sign up for Invisalign. Sigh… Give Robbie a hug for me and tell him I know how he feels or felt. Oatmeal? I’m eating oatmeal right now!!!
ReplyDeleteLike we say with small children, let's just wrap you in cotton-batting and have sit over there for a few years until you outgrow this! But, I know, you cannot do that. Life must be lived, even with all of the topsy-turvy incidents.

ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, Kay. Old folks skin bruise really easy too. My mom's legs were covered in black and blue splotches from I dunno what. I told the nurse I was afraid of being charged with elder abuse, but she told me abuse injuries are different. Whew. Mom was constantly falling down too. And she didn't say a word. I wanted to tether her sometimes !! They so hard head. As for the teeth cracking, reading all the comments, I thinknk it's aging. I got 3 broken molars and didn't even know when they cracked! I felt my teeth and discovered a puka. One tooth, it totally broke and left the filling behind only. I vam not replacing them, they're unseen molars and I am scared of dentists and the cost vs. longevity is not worth it. I thought you're always so active and hea.thy, living a healthy life style. So I am sorry to hear about your recent health issues. Gosh you live so much cleaner than me. Hoping for the best for you and mom. BB
ReplyDeleteKay of Musings: Oh gosh, BB… Yup. That’s exactly what we’re dealing with. Mom’s skin tears so easily. I’ve had to buy a huge supply of bandages and gentle tape. The doctor is surprised I let her out of the house, but mom gets REALLY antsy if she can’t spend time in the garden and picking up leaves from the roadside tree. Sigh.. So once her toe heals, I’m afraid I have to let her do her thing so she can enjoy that time outside.

#'s 2 and 3 are ugly but fixable, especially since you mom's scan showed no damage to her head. I'm a bit worries about # 1. Keep us posted.

ReplyDeleteThose are nasty . The toe can be very uncomfortable and takes a long time to heal. Luck in threes? It depends how long you want to go back or how much time forward you allow. It could be more than three.

ReplyDeleteWhen Tim was in the hospital, in the middle of all that scary stuff, I also had a tooth break. I couldn't believe it. They gave me an estimate for $2000 to have it repaired. I couldn't believe it.
ReplyDeleteGood gosh! That is AWFUL! Luckily, we do have insurance but it didn't cover it all, of course. And now I'll have to pay for Invisalign.
