I've been avoiding writing a post about politics, but I felt compelled to with the situation in our country right now.
Going through the editorial letters last week, I came across this letter. It addresses what I've been wondering. I know 98% of the people I hang out with are seeing the evil that is Trump. So why is it half our country might vote for him?
This letter gives you an idea.
I think it's similar to what happened in Germany. How is it so many of the German people supported Hitler and the evil he perpetuated killing 6 million Jews?
In fact, I saw this on Reuters:
WASHINGTON, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said on Thursday that Jewish-American voters would be partly to blame if he loses the Nov. 5 election to Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate.
And then there's the whole thing that he and Vance are saying about the Haitians in Springfield, Ohio.
This is from the BBC news:
A baseless claim that illegal immigrants from Haiti have been eating domestic pets in a small Ohio city has been repeated by Donald Trump.
During ABC's presidential debate, Trump said: "In Springfield, they are eating the dogs. The people that came in, they are eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there."
Much of Trump/Vance attacks are nasty, calling Kamala "mentally impaired, stupid, dumb as a rock, etc." This was on USA TODAY.
Trump used similar rhetoric Saturday during a speech in Wisconsin, and he's frequently called Harris "stupid," "weak" and "dumb as a rock" on the campaign trail. Trump has also repeatedly criticized Harris' racial identity, falsely saying she "turned Black."
We always taught our elementary kids to be more respectful and to refrain from that kind of nasty attacks on others.
Why does so many Americans want a leader like this for our country?!? Why would you want this kind of example for our children? Why would you want him to represent who we are to the rest of the world?
Why?

Did you watch the Vance/Walz debate? I kept wondering why Vance kept blaming things on Kamala Harris. She was/is the Vice President. The Vice President presides over the Senate, certifies the tally of the Electoral College and performs ceremonial duties for the president. The Vice President does not have that much power. I don't know what Vance is thinking he'd be able to do if he became Vice President. I imagine he'd be sorely disappointed.

DeleteHi Kris! It's so nice to meet you. I doubt he would do that, but if he did... would he be much better? He's a whole lot smarter than Trump but he's been spouting a whole bunch of lies about immigrants eating pets, etc.
DeleteI honestly think that Vance was the choice of the Heritage Foundation and like Putin, they view trump as a useful idiot. As long as trump is fanned over, he will be happy to wander off and play golf at his resorts, making huge money housing the secret service while Vance and the Heritage Foundation work towards their goals.

DeleteKay, I'm baffled as well. One difference between us and those following tRump is we read and follow reputable news sources. If someone is solely dependent upon Fox they won't get the full picture and will get distorted information. He knows he lies after all why would he complain of being fact checked if he did a 60 Minutes interview? He wants to stay out of jail and wants to enrich himself more, that's his whole aim in running for President again.

DeleteI haven't voted for Trump nor will I, but I think the article missed the mark a bit. Almost all the people I know who will vote for him don't care about his immorality or character flaws. They vote for him because of his stance on the issues. Most present in their minds is the disaster at our southern border where historic floods of migrants were left to cross our borders unchecked. Granted that has changed when Biden/Harris reversed course, but those days are still fresh in their minds. Another big factor is the economy. Yes I think the economy is much better now than it was four years ago, but most of the Trump supporters seem to count pennies, especially when it comes to groceries and those seem to stubbornly stick to their former high prices. The final big factor they all subscribe too is that every plan VP Harris has touted is to give tax money to various groups of people in our society. They think they will have to pay for it in the form of higher taxes. Sure Harris said she will tax the big evil corporations to pay for it but they know that those same corporations will just pass the cost down to the end consumer.
ReplyDeleteWhen you mention Trump's abhorrent behavior to them, they all just chuckled with a "boys will be boys" kind of laugh. These people (the ones I know anyway) are decent moral people in person themselves so I don't think they are feeling like they get a license to go out and do immoral things by having someone as immoral as Trump in office.
As to Vance/Waltz, of course Vance will blame Harris especially now that she came out and said she wouldn't change a single thing Biden did during his term and that she was involved in all decisions. Of course that latter statement came out well after the Vance statement. But show me a politician who hasn't blamed another opposing politician for the loosest of connections to any topic or promise something that they have no authority or power to fulfill. I don't think it can be done, at least during the election season. Only after they are elected do we start getting more truth and measured responses. I blame it on our two party system where one has to cater to the extremes (left and right) in order to get elected. A third, more centrist party would help eliminate that sort of thing.
My $0.02 worth anyway. I'm going to be glad when this election is over and politics isn't so divisive for awhile.
Ed, this is really interesting and thoughtful. You and one other commenter cite the two party system. We have a multi party Parliament at present in Canada and I have to report that it isn' doing all that well either. Nor is the multi-party group that Mr Netenyahu is heading in Israel, in my opinion. I wish I had an answer. Other than to wash Mr Trump's mouth out with strong soap.

DeleteMuch as I hate to say it, I have a horrible feeling that the orange idiot will be elected again. The people who support him don't analyse his words, but accept them at face value. I'm just not convinced America is ready for a woman President, and particularly not a mixed race woman. I really, really hope I'm wrong.

DeleteI was appalled when he was running in 2016 and the comments surfaced about sexual assault. I was just blown away when people at my church laughed it off. I was very involved for decades as a Sunday School teacher, parish council member and president of the ladies organization. I no longer attend church. Every move he makes, every word he says terrifies me. People told me I was worried for nothing, he was just a blow hard. Remember when he stopped visas from "certain" countries? While planes were in mid-air? People laughed off my concerns about women's rights and Roe v Wade. The Supreme Court appointments are a joke and congress was complicit.
ReplyDeleteI am a poll worker in a small rural community. Voters come in wearing t-shirts with America spelled out in assault rifles. They talk issues despite being told they can't, they talk candidates and are threatening. The policy of my state is to let them vote as quickly as possible so they will leave. But they linger.
Vance is from my state. Everything about him is a lie. He was not a poor kid from Appalachia. He grew up with middle class grandparents in a middle class area. He took advantage of every social program and moved to California. There he created this maga personality. He is a liar and instigator.
This weekend we are traveling out of state for a funeral for my husband's elderly aunt. She leaves two lovely daughters (an engineer and a doctor) and a lovely son. She also has another daughter with two children who has been left out of the obituary. This daughter has not had any contact with the family since the failed insurrection. Prior she was all in on the cult and was threatening even more violence then happened. She actually threatened me over a facebook post and told me if I did not leave facebook, she would give all my personal information to her country-wide "group" to dox me. No one wants contact with her due to her beliefs and threats.
Miss Merry, thank you so much for telling us about your experience. This is such a nail-bitter of an election season. Of course, I'm agreeing with everything you've written. Vance does scare me too. It really upsets me that he would continue to promote the racist lies about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio while knowing they were not true.

ReplyDeleteKay, It IS so hard to understand why so many people could follow this man. I do think some are more about supporting his way of dealing with the issues than the man's character and values. But why they think a man of such character would actually do any good is beyond me. And Vance's saying that Kamala should have done more in the last 4 years was laughable. She wasn't President. I'm not sure, but I don't think the Vice President is much in command (except for taking over the Presidency if something happens to the President). And following Trumps' past of firing everyone that doesn't agree with him, I doubt that Vance would have much say even as Vice President. The whole situation is unbelievably scary. I don't know how we got into this mess. But I only pray that people come to their senses and see the danger that lies ahead.
As I told Miss Merry, Vance scares me as much as Trump does just because he is smarter and sounds rather diabolical.

DeleteTrump supporters don't just support Trump because they like him. It is because they don't like the Democratic party. I wish we didn't have a 2 party ruling governing body. Both sides might have good ideas but being in one party or the other dictates their votes. Sad state of affairs which also forces us to join a party and despise the other.

My long-Republican parents rolled over in their graves and changed their voter registration when Trump lied before his first time in the White House. The article you quote is interesting, but what I find as I surf around American sites (we don't identify as Americal up here, did you know?) is this belief that Trump, flawed as he is, can fix the economy and should be let loose to do so. Yikes.

DeleteI'm glad someone in the blogging world has the courage to speak up and ask why--I appreciated all the comments here too. Margaret summed up my feelings exactly, but I did appreciate Ed's "Devils Advocate" response which helps to understand where these MAGA people are coming from. At the same time, it seems like a teaspoon of common sense is all you need to see Trump is deranged and crooked as they come. I received my early ballot on Oct 1, returned it Oct 2 for Harris-Walz, Allegheny Cty Board of Electors received it Oct 4. Here in Pittsburgh, every political sign on my street--EVERY ONE--is for Kamala Harris. But if I visit my hometown of Waynesburg, the southwestern tip of Pa, every sign there is for Trump. It doesn't feel like home to me anymore.

DeleteI share your “WHY” from the bottom of my heart. I’ve been sick and tired for long of T’s rhetoric to play on people’s anger and fear and his hubristic attitude. The important issue doesn’t look economy or immigration but the deepening divide of the country more and more. I wonder why it’s been happening. I’m hopeful that people with common sense and critical thinking lead to H’s victory … but as of now no confidence feeling “why” while watching the process. With best wishes.

ReplyDeleteThere are not many signs in our neighborhood. I have seen a couple of Harris/Walz signs and only one of the other, which is unusual. Last time it was very different. This whole situation is beyond bizarre. That man will do anything, say anything to stay out of prison, and unfortunately innocents will suffer. I read even FEMA are being threatened now.
