I'd vaguely heard about the February 5th protest against Trump's attack on democracy.
This is from NPR:
These demonstrations are being organized by the 50501 Movement, which stands for "50 protests. 50 states. 1 movement." The protests are a response to what organizers describe as "the anti-democratic and illegal actions of the Trump administration." This marks the second nationwide protest by the group, following an event held on Feb. 5.
And then I read too late that there would be another protest on Monday, President's Day.
I wrote a blog post on April 24, 2017 titled Marching for Science. It was about the cuts that were being made to the U.S.E.P.A. where Art spent more than a couple decades to protect our environment.
That protest march was better organized and publicized at the time and there were a LOT more people we marched alongside.
And now... here we are again. Fighting the same fight along with all the other horrible cuts and changes Trump is making to our government and our democracy.
We couldn't march this time. Art had his Meals on Wheels run to do around noon on President's Day and this time, we also have mom to care for.
This was at noon on Monday. The son of a good friend of mine took this photo from his condo. He said he could hear a lot of car honking and cheering. It's not as big a crowd as 2017. But I imagine it will grow with each protest as more people learn about it. My niece later told me she drove by also and saw lots of people protesting.
I signed up with 50501 to be notified when there's another protest march so we can perhaps make arrangements to join the call to stop this madness. I don't know if it would help, but I KNOW nothing will help if we do nothing.
POSTSCRIPT:
This was the front page of yesterday's Star Advertiser. I was happy to see there was a decent turnout here on Oahu and on Maui.
I need to start thinking of a sign to prepare for the next protest that I hope we can attend and perhaps we can bring mom along too.
Even though mom has dementia, she still remembers knowing the evil that Trump is.

One of my teacher buddies shared this with our group.https://www.facebook.com/reel/1346550029703841
This is the U.S. representative from New Mexico, Melanie Stansbury. It was awesome to hear her telling off her Republican colleagues.

I'm glad your paper covered it. I understand that most ignored it.
ReplyDeleteI did not attend the protests. I feel guilty but I am 8 years older than the Women's March I attended. It was below freezing in my state. I live in a small town and the nearest marches were miles away. They don't seem as well organized than the 2016 marches. I keep hoping younger people will step up. I think that, until voters are actually affected, they don't seem to care what happens to anyone else. I guess I am in a deep funk.
ReplyDeleteScary times
ReplyDeleteThank you Kay, for this post. I have been following Meidas Touch and a couple of other accounts on social media which keep me pretty much up to date on the frightening activities of this administration. I feel somewhat helpless and thought about joining a protest but haven’t yet. I only wrote to our senators and representatives. If you’re on TikTok, I’ll text you the account of a British guy. Interesting to hear his perspective across the pond.
ReplyDeleteKay of Musings: Good morning, Pat. 😄 It’s so wonderful to hear from you. I’ve missed seeing you and the others. I’m afraid I’m not on any social media except this blog. I can hardly keep up with this one. One of these days, we should all go to one of these protests together. It may not help, but it would feel good to do something. I’ve written to all our representatives and senators too. But I know they’re already trying really hard, especially Mazie and Brian.
DeleteI think a lot of us feel helpless and I’m not sure protests will help but I admire those that do it. Besides writing to our congress, I’ve also made small donations to the Democratic Party and to one who is running in FL hoping to stack up against the republicans.
DeleteThe next four years are going to see a lot of these kinds of protests, but will it make any changes? Mr Trump and his buddies are very determined.
ReplyDeleteKay, I 'shared' Melanie's video on Facebook... thought it needed to be heard.
ReplyDeleteI too heard about the protests too late. I feel guilty that I'm not doing more, but I feel so helpless. :(
ReplyDeleteI drove passed them on Monday, dropping off a friend who lives in downtown. I honked and honked.
ReplyDeleteKay of Musings: Yay! 😄
DeleteI am with you 100%!
ReplyDeleteThis is very interesting, and it is also good to know. Sad to say, I had not given this much thought until I read about it here. Thank you for sharing this enlightenment. I definitely should be more informed now that TRUMP is in office. Thanks to you I'll become more aware. Wishing you well, my friend. Have a wonderful Week!
ReplyDeleteI get bulletins about upcoming group actions that are planned. Of course I am in no shape to go protesting but my spirit is with them.
ReplyDeleteNo other protest march day is planned yet, but there is an economic blackout day planned for Feb 28. I'm not sure how effective this will be. It may just hurt struggling local businesses.
I hate politics with a passion. But Trump's return cause a friend of mines to be so depressed. He gives me a stomach ache. I try to avoid reading any news about him and his actions but when I see cuts on programs I do read them. I guess my interest is like rubber necking at car accidents. I am reading more political news now then in my entire life. I try to focus on the Serenity Prayer and tell myself to Abide and Trust in God. -BB
ReplyDeleteI can't help but be informed because people affected keep telling me about it. I can't put my head in the sand although I'd like to. My cousin just told me that her daughter (who is a teacher) was upset because of cuts to their educational grants. It just doesn't end. Every day brings a new misery.
DeleteDid Trump actually say that Zelenskyy is a dictator? Seriously?
Sigh... I wish I could trust in God, but don't they say "God helps those who help themselves?"
I hope that people continue to demonstrate . Trump won't get this but maybe some Republicans might catch on that what is going on is wrong.
ReplyDeleteYou go, girl. And Art. We must do every little thing we are capable of.
ReplyDeleteAnd now he has posted a photo of himself as a king. Disgusting. The Marches were not covered in most media outlets, but since I don't follow a lot of those ones, I did see and hear about them. Some folks stood on our protest corner in our local town in the frigid weather ... No one likes what he is doing.
ReplyDeleteFelon and Elon are going to do so much irreparable damage before it's over
ReplyDeleteWe are in terrible trouble in the US today. And he told us he would be doing all this if he got elected. No surprise here.
ReplyDeleteI love it that there is a movement to protest. Good for them!!! Up here we seem also to be protesting by flag waving (good idea) and booing the American anthem at sporting events, a method I would not support and find to be ugly. I hope my American readers know this.
ReplyDeleteI've heard nothing about this. Good for you. It's been tragic. So much suffering in the world.
