I hadn't even heard about the Hands Off protest movement until my Kauai cousins told me about it about a week ago. They'd made a bunch of very artistic, very clever signs for the Hands Off rally that was going to happen in Lihue on Saturday, April 5th. I wished I could have been with them but, we are in the midst of too many things happening at once at our house.
They texted photos to me of the rally on Saturday. A friend had taken it and shared it with them. And then they shared it with me so I could share it with you. Ummm... My retired teacher cousin said the dog was adorable but the sign was rather.... uuummm strong. So I changed it a bit, but you get the idea.
And yes, I wish I were with my cousins on Saturday. They told me that a newspaper photographer/writer from Kauai estimated 2,000 people showing up. And the funny thing was I knew that photographer very well from college. We are a very small state. The joke is to ask, "What school you grad?" and you'll find out that we're all connected.
When I looked online, I saw that over 1,400 rallies had taken place around the country.

This is all reminding me of the 60's when I was attending the University of Hawaii. There were so many protests back then. And now it's time to make our voices heard again. We are still lucky to live in a country where protesting is a right. At least it is for now.

It’s not ‘my place’ to comment but you’ve certainly got a lot to complain/protest about in your country. It’s great to see so many of you able to do so - but do you think they’ll (those in power) will take a blind bit of notice
ReplyDeleteYou will want to complain when the products imported from the United States increased so much in price and there is a drop off of sales of the products you export to the US. The tariffs will be a game-changer for the world economy.

ReplyDeleteI did not attend the protest here in Fresno, but many of my friends did. I did, however, follow the posts on Threads, and I reposted each and every march that came through, spreading the news that Americans are not going to take this mess lying down. Many of the protestors said they were inspired by Cory Booker's marathon. Good trouble.
ReplyDeleteDan and I attended the protest nearby in the rain. Newspaper estimated there were 1500 there. It would have been even more I'm sure if it wasn't cold and raining. It was wonderful and all the cars driving by were positive in their response except two. I posted photos on my blog on Sunday.

ReplyDeleteIt's heartening to see so much protest against the idiot POTUS. He'll brush it off but eventually he'll have to acknowledge it.
I hope the protests mean something and accomplish change. It sometimes feels like we're whistling in the wind. :(
ReplyDeleteI think the protests are a start. Hopefully they will get the attention of federal and state level representatives and senators that seem to be sitting on their hands right now.
ReplyDeleteI do agree somewhat that we need change in government and how things are run but Trump's very drastic moves are too much, too fast, and too shocking. He is the only President that I can remember who has instigated so much change in the very first months of taking office. His approval rating is 53%! I don't think the last few Presidents ever reached that number while in office. I believe that is what he is paying attention to. However, peaceful protests are our American right, and I do hope it matters (without the F words).

DeleteHow splendid. I am so glad to see the voice of reason out in force. But, I do worry that it will take force, hopefully the force of law, to make P Trump behave.

Bob and I didn't manage to go ... too much walking and hard to find parking ...BUT my daughter, her husband, her son and a college friend and her daughter and her husband all went to the Kansas City protest!!
