It Was the Back, Now it's the Butt

It's Art's fault.

He's the one who showed me this article which was titled How Healthy Are You Aging? Take These 4 Fitness Tests to Find Out

https://www.health.com/aging-well-fitness-tests-8668645

He thought it would be fun to try doing it. I said I would do it first.

30-Second Chair Stand

This assessment measures lower-body strength and endurance, and it can help identify adults at risk of falling. It may also be predictive of mortality—research has found that performing fewer than four stands in 30 seconds is linked to a threefold increase in risk of death among people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

How to perform:

  1. Set a stopwatch for 30 seconds, or have a friend time you.
  2. Sit in the middle of a chair.
  3. Cross your arms and place your hands on opposite shoulders.
  4. Keep your feet flat on the floor, your back straight, and your arms against your chest.
  5. Begin timing.
  6. Rise to a full standing position, then sit back down again.
  7. Repeat as many times as you can within 30 seconds.
According to the CDC, a below-average score may indicate a heightened risk of falling. For those aged 60 to 64, the average score is 14 for men and 12 for women.

OK, I did great with this one. In fact, Art said I could stop before the 30 seconds because I was not having any problem at all with this.

So then he suggested I try the one about getting up from the floor.

                                                                 Sitting-Rising
One reliable way to test balance, strength, and range of motion—the extent to which a body part can move freely—is the sitting-rising test, which gauges how well you can sit down on the floor and rise back up without assistance.

How to perform:

  1. Stand barefoot on a non-slip surface, such as a thin mat.
  2. Without worrying about speed, try to sit on the floor using as little assistance as possible.
  3. From the seated position, rise back up to standing—again, using the least amount of assistance needed.

To determine your score, start with a maximum of five points for sitting and five for rising. Deduct one point if you use any body part, such as a knee or hand, for support. Any unsteadiness or loss of balance during the test knocks off a half point (crossing your legs at any point is fine, as long as you don’t use the sides of your feet for support).

A recent study found that middle-aged and older adults who scored below 7.5 had a significantly higher risk of dying from natural causes within 12 years compared to those who scored a perfect 10.

I couldn't believe it. I don't know what I was doing wrong. I may have had my legs crossed but
I pushed myself up and suddenly fell backwards. I fell on my tailbone to excruciating pain.
Even worse, I felt so dumb. Art was in shock.
He told our daughter about it and the first thing she asked me was, "So your back isn't even totally healed but you decided to try this?" And then I got a lecture.

I'm kind of getting used to my daughter scolding reminding me to be careful. 😳

Oh... there's two more tests, but I guess I'll wait until my back (and my butt) heals. 😕

POSTSCRIPT:
My daughter then did some research and sent Art out to a nearby CVS to get this pillow for my butt.

And you know what? It's a lot easier to sit down now. I'm even taking it to the car to use when we have to go somewhere.

  3. I struggle to do either of these and you have my sympathy for bunging the back; I do it frequently, to the point that JG has forbidden me to lug the laundry baskets up the stairs. They sit at the bottom until he gets around to moving them. The joys of old age, eh. But good on you for the chair test pass.

  4. These ruddy tests will be the death of us!

  5. I can do the chair one but the sitting on the floor. Nope. I have to go to a "downward dog" in order to stand back up. And sitting down to the floor would be to my knees first for sure. Hope you heal from trying this out.

  6. Kay, I also had no problem with the sitting test (did 22 in 30 seconds). But started to try the floor test and decided not to... I know I can get down easily, but not up... and afraid it would strain my leg or back muscles to try to do either without some support from my arms.
So sorry you landed on your butt. Probably most of us would.

  7. I have issues with tests. What is the point, if you can't, won't or don't want to do anything about it!
My poor hubby couldn't do this, but his back is deteriorating.

  8. Ouch. One of the most difficult ways of standing is with your legs crossed. We tried this in our gym with spotters and mats and since I do this often while photographing,...I can do it easily at nearly 70. BUT, it takes balance, mobility, and practice. I sit cross legged with both hands holding my long lens and then stand up.
Practice a lot easier things for your balance.
Ouch, I am so sorry you messed up your tailbone! My son broke his weeks ago and said it is a horrible pain.

    Heal quickly!

  9. Tailbone issues are VERY painful and take a while to heal! I'm scared to try the standing up from the floor one.

  10. You poor thing!!! I have such a fear of falling I wouldn't attempt it. I will fail anyway. My children treat me like a 2 year old.

  11. Oh my! The crossed legs probably did it. Of course Art can pass with flying colors.

  12. Well, I might be able to do the chair stand, but there's no way I could do the off the floor one. Am I in danger of falling? Of course. All of the time. Goody for you if you can do these. I am an 81 year old woman who has been chopped up many times.
I am sorry that you hurt yourself. We have nothing to prove to anyone but ourselves.

  13. Oh dear ... I am so sorry.

A Doctor I know said "Aging is a natural part of life that you don’t need to fear; we will all go through it. Your changing lines, hair colour or body in no way detract from who you really are and the goodness in your heart."

I just do my best to age as well and as gracefully as I can.

Do hope you feel better soon.

    All the best Jan

  14. Pretty sure your Physical Therapist would not have recommended such "tests" to check your body. I'm joining the lecture. Bet your Mom could pass those tests, but do NOT have her try them! Naughty Art. You could also write the author and ask them to place a stern warning at the beginning of the article, as it's not worth falling. Linda in Kansas

  15. You are brave. I don't think I'll even try.

  16. The first two tests are certainly hazardous for seniors. Don' try that one again.

  17. I don’t think standardized tests work well for everyone. Due to bad knees I wouldn’t do well, but it wouldn’t mean that the rest of me was in dire straits. Hopefully, you will soon be on the mend.

  18. I do hope you heal up fast from your injiuries, Kay. That pillow looks like just the thing.

  19. Back when I was always on my computer, my butt would get sore enough for a pillow

  20. I got 10 on the sit then stand test. I was timing myself which made it slower. I’m 75. I think if someone timed me my score would have been at least 12. I tried other test and did the same as you. Kaplomp! I think I failed. And now my hip hurts🤣🤣 Galla Creek of AR

    1. Oh no.... I hope your hip feels better soon. Art reminded me that I could have used my hands (you just get a few points deducted), but I was being cocky and felt I could get up without it. What a shock when I really couldn't. Arrrgghhh!
