Profusion of Pigeons!

Pigeons on our roof a few years ago was a terrible problem. They were building nests under our solar panels, pooping and leaving nesting garbage all over our roof. I was also getting a lot of bites from bird mites.

We had to have our roof cleaned several times just to get the mess off. This is Ku. He was up on our roof for quite a while just getting all the debris off from the pigeons. Their poop and mess was also in the gutters and weeds started growing in it. All that had to be removed.

We then had netting installed to bird proof the solar panels a couple of years ago. A few pigeons still come by but they don't stay long.

I think.

And then a good friend of ours sent this photo that he took on one of his daily walks. It absolutely sent shivers up my spine.

We see people in our neighborhood sometimes feeding pigeons outside and I wonder how their neighbors are feeling about that.

  2. I wonder why the roofs are so attractive to the pigeons.

  3. I'm glad I don't live somewhere where birds roosting on my roof are a problem. As far as I can tell, I've never seen a bird set foot on our shingles at all. I've seen the occasional one perch on the edge of a gutter for a few seconds before flying off but that it as close as they come to our roof.

  4. I remember your problem, but that house is something else. We once had a much smaller pigeon problem.

  6. The photo show a disgusting mess from pigeons. Pigeons have bad press but they have many friends.

  7. Jeepers! So, you need netting all over your roof, house, and draped over your Mom's orchids, to also stop those bad bubel birds is it, that eat flower blooms! Hope you can keep them away so the mites don't return. Maybe your house has a wonderful view of the neighborhood up on the rooftop? Linda in Kansas

  8. Pigeons are so smart and creatures of habit, unlike doves who are rather dumb - but still creatures of habit. I have a baby tortoise now named Max. He is a red foot tortoise and about 5" long. I let him roam around my yard (which is quite a learning opportunity for where they hide). Every morning I would set his foot in a little hutch, find him, let him eat, and leave. I used to think he ate it all but sometimes I couldn't find him, left the food in the hutch for him, and then be pleasantly surprised that the food was gone, thinking he came out of hiding to eat and then hide again. WRONG. It was a pigeon that I saw on tape after I set up my iphone camera to time lapse video. So smart! I ended up stringing elastic across the opening so the turtle could slip under but the bird couldn't. The bird finally gave up, I hope.

  9. Birds are cool, but that many of them plus their poop=NO WAY. I still remember and recoil from scenes from Hitchcock's "The Birds." Terrifying.

  12. I agree that's a lot of pigeons! We have never had any problem with birds... and you might think it's because of the feral cats, but we feed both the ferals and the birds (and even special feed the crows). I can see why they (the pigeons) could be a problem, but just wonder why they choose the roofs... instead of trees?
