Monster Arthropod

I was seeing mom off on the Handi-Van taking her to the day care which she absolutely loves. The drivers are all so very caring, making sure her belt is secured and that she's comfortable.

Art was in the carport and decided to come and wave goodbye to mom along with me. Mom always loves to have us see her off. We often chuckle that it's like seeing our child off to school. Well... except our children walked to school every morning when we lived in Illinois.

Anyway... as the Handi-Van took off, Art looked down and saw this HUGE centipede! It has to be the biggest one I've seen in a long, long time.

"Oh my gosh," I said. "I need to take a photo of this for my blog. Could you put your hand there to show how big it is?"

Uuuummm... This was the closest to this monster arthropod as Art was willing to put his hand.

He's very kind to help me find ideas for my blog.

I sent photos of this to my friends here and Illinois as well as my favorite Kauai cousins.

This was the conversation by text I had with my cousins, Lorna and Holly.

Lorna: Ugh! I absolutely hate them. I've been bitten about 5 times already, and those bites burn!!! Even small ones' bites hurt just as much.

Holly: Holy cow! That is one healthy looking centipede! At least it wasn't IN the car! 😬

Lorna: And the first time I was bitten, it hurt so much I drank a lot of vodka hoping it would dull the pain. Nope. Then, a couple of days later, I noticed a red line moving up my leg. It was infected (the doctor said centipedes eat things like roaches, which is a good thing, but yuck), so that's probably why it got infected. Had to get a shot (you know where) of antibiotics.

Me: 😄

Holly: You should have poured the vodka on the bite. 😂

Lorna: Didn't think of that. It could have killed some of the bacteria though. Or maybe I should have had a second shot of vodka.

Like I said before, they are my favorite Kauai cousins and are the most fun ever!

And I just had to give you an even better close up view of this big guy.

My friend, Diane asked if Art had killed it. I told her that Art had sent the huge fellow down the drain in the street.

And Diane replied, "What? We had a centipede come out of the toilet a long time ago!" 😯

Oops!

  1. That is a huge thing and scary, too. I guess they like the Hawaiian weather as well as we do. Yikes!

  4. Diane’s crawled out of the toilet and I had one crawl out of the shower drain!!! There I stood, naked, with no weapon!! 😱

  5. I'm glad that we don't have such things here. I wouldn't get within five feet of such a thing voluntarily!

  6. OMG...the texts are hilarious in a way and so fun! Since I have an affection for weird bugs, I would have loved to seen it in person, but NOT get bit!

  7. That centipede is the stuff of nightmares! I didn't know that they bit. EEK!! Older Daughter hated them in New York; they move much faster than the cockroaches. Hope it stays in the drain!

  12. Ooooo LAWDY, there's no way I'd get close enough to that "Bad-Boy" for him to bite me. He would have to sneak-up on me to bite me. LOLLL 😀😀

  14. Yikes! I just finished two books about an RN who built a bed and breakfast (true story) in Lahaina. The literal shacks she had to live in until the project was finished were full of those, behind moist walls, along with some version of roaches. She described them as able to jump up to attack and bite you. She got some type of bug repellant and bleach. A Hawaiian told her to make a compost pile away from the shack to attract them away from the shack. Bleh. She lived there for 25 years and described and befriended many of the folks in central old Lahaina town. Took her 12 years to produce one book, that unfortunately was published just before the fires. Yes, her place near Lahaina Shores burned down with the Lahaina fires. It made me glad I didn't relocate to Hawaii, but I didn't know the creatures lived in the "city" so much. I prefer geckos. I read both of these books in a flash they were so captivating. Describes some of the intentional delays and corruption towards builders. "Lahaina Town, second edition, My Heart, My Home", by Penny J Mullen, second book is "Dead and Buried in a Cane Field: The Build that Built Me." Title is a common phrase among Hawaiians. She is supposed to be coming out with a 3rd book.
I smashed a small cnetipede in my floor-level apartment with my flip-flop (slippah.) It was maybe 1 inch. Then, I read somewhere that you aren't supposed to smash centipedes to kill them. A second one was almost 2". I set a heavy glass over it until it croaked.
Call Animal Control if you see another around your house. Linda in Kansas

    1. Apparently there are several types of centipedes. This one would be hard to kill with a slipper. American cockroaches are the big ones that you see in Hawaii. We also have the German cockroaches that we used to see in Illinois too. The American cockroaches can fly. I actually wrote a blog post about it. https://travelerswife.blogspot.com/2019/03/a-cockroach-memory.html
That's so sad that the RN who wrote that book lost her home and bed and breakfast. Sigh. I've not been back to Lahaina since the fires. Well... actually... they really don't appreciate people coming to see the destruction.
