OK... I needed to break into my travel blogging to reassure everyone that we're more or less safe from all the devastating rainstorms and flooding that has hit the islands. It's so sad to see families whose homes have been devastated. The power outages have also caused horrible problems for so many of the grocery stores.
The rainstorm was so bad 2 weeks ago that schools and government offices were closed. Mom’s day care that she calls "Senior Club" was closed as a precaution.
Well... just when we thought it was over, this week we got another round of very heavy rains. We haven't had something like this in a long, long time. In fact, we were complaining at one time that it seemed we were in a drought.
What we've had to deal with isn't much at all compared to what many others on the islands have suffered but I thought I'd write about it.
The first thing that happened was the support poles around our house developing these water bubbles. These poles support our carport and patio. First we saw these bubbles lifting the paint and plaster away from the poles. When Art poked a hole in it, a lot of water drained out. But where did the leak come from? We don't know but once the rain stops, we'll have to look and see what we can find.
And then I was walking up the stairs and saw this! 😮
The stairs are separating from the outside wall of the house.
Ack!
Sigh...
I guess when it all dries out, we'll caulk it again.
And then this!
It was a leak from the window. But we couldn't figure out where in the window it was coming from.
Friday morning, when I looked out at the neighbor's house, I saw that they'd put plywood sheets over their ocean facing windows. That's where the bad weather was coming from.
It never occurred to us to put up our hurricane sheeting on that window.
So in between episodes of rain, we went out and put up the hurricane protection on that leaky window.
Our TV weatherman Guy Hagi is always saying, "We have the best weather on the planet."
Well... I'm looking forward to seeing that again because right now... it's the pits!
POSTSCRIPT:
I wrote the above post on Saturday. On Sunday morning, I saw that the hurricane sheets did manage to keep out the rain which fell heavily overnight.
They’re saying the rains aren’t over yet. I’m hoping it will be light and that the worst is over because the people living in lower parts of the island are really suffering right now.🤞
I was wondering how you were doing and of course others. I saw some videos of flooding on Oahu also that looked pretty bad. Glad you are safe and hoping others remain safe too.

ReplyDeleteKay, I was also getting worried. My son (who lived a few years on Oahu and loved it - would love to go back, but can't afford it) told me about all the rain and flooding that was going on there recently. Hopefully the worst is over, but glad you posted about it.

ReplyDeleteWe discovered that we had damage from the heavy wet snow we had last week. Some big limbs broke of a fir tree over our roof and one poked a hole in the roof. We only discovered it after several days of rain and snow melt. We have water damage in an upstairs bedroom. We rented a dehumidifier and got everything dried out. Jake and Isaac cleared the roof and got a temp patch on the roof. Bids are out to contractors for tree work, roof repair and dry wall replacement. Insurance will cover most of it.
Over here in Kaimuki, we were pretty good. I spent the days weeding tall and persistant rubbish "grass" and planting good grass in the very difficult compacted ground which became soft with the constant rain and occasional downpour. I must have looked crazy out in the yard with hat and pick, but I was enjoying it and could see the fruits of my labor slowly (very slowly) get revealed each day.

Good gosh! I had no idea Kaimuki was hit so badly as that!!! Wow! I really feel horrible for the people in Waialua who lost everything! I was surprised that we made network news too because relatives and friends on the mainland all texted to ask how we were. We're lucky we live on the side of a hill at a higher elevation, BUT we are going to be looking for a contractor to help with the leaks and outside house damage.
DeleteIt rained really hard but it was just that street that got flooded for several minutes, and then drained away. It was such a dramatic moment and the person videoing it cracked me up.

Gosh, I'm certainly glad you're ok. Once the HawaiiNewsNow.com station was showing flooding, I got confused as to where "north shore" flooding was. Seems the untrusted dam is near the center with its water flow heading to the two main towns on the shores of the north. I'm familiar with Laie since I'd been to the Polynesian Culture Center, but later news showed it had some flooding.
ReplyDeleteThe results of your leaks is very similar to the leak patterns in my one-story apartment, where we finally got management to get a real roofer to do the complete replacement job. I had interior ceiling "bubble-boobs" and that "slouching" paint drooping down a wall. Not sure about your solar panel installation method, or the age of your roof, but you may be looking at a new roof to stop them all. To plaster spots may not stop the interior rafter droolings of rain during the next storm. Poo! Better than some other damages I guess. Hang in there! Linda in Kansas
