Doubling the Bird of Paradise

We've passed this house and seen this unusual sight before. But this time I just had to take a photo. Growing up in Waipahu, many people had the Bird of Paradise flower in their gardens.

I think. 😐

I just know we had two large plants.

I think. 😗 I'll have to ask my brother. But I do know I never saw anything like this.

It's another flower growing out of the original flower.

It does bring to mind the shape of a bird, hence its name. Granted... it would be a two headed bird. 😊

POSTSCRIPT: We went by the house again several days later and found more birds of paradise blooming. Most of them looked like they were going to do this piggy back type flowers. I guess it must be a new variety of Bird of Paradise.

  2. It's a mommy and a baby! Or maybe twins. I think it looks much prettier than a single bloom. Wow! Gotta ask a florist, or a landscape place if this is uncommon or a new version. Linda in Kansas

  4. I think bird of paradise is my favorite flower. It's so exotic and doesn't grow outside anywhere near to my area.

  5. I like the flower but I don't plant it in my yard because the "bush" part of it takes up a lot of space. Your shot of this double varienty is stunning!

  8. AI answers say it is quite rare though after finding a scientific article, it seems like it isn't quite that uncommon.

"Occasionally a second spathe will be produced from the primary one, giving a double tier of flowers."
