I haven't done many restaurant reviews because we very rarely go out to eat but this is what I thought of this experience.
First off: I looked on the web and found what they call the Prix Fixe Menu. It listed the price as $35.00 a person but when we got there we found that it was really $39.00.
You could get a preset appetizer selection (sparerib, blackened ahi, crispy vegetable spring roll) and choices for entree (Macadamia crusted white fish, grilled salmon or beef short ribs) and dessert (Macadamia torte or Roy's Melting Hot Chocolate Souffle with raspberry coulis and vanilla ice cream). Mom and Keiko chose the white fish. Sam and I had the salmon and Art had the beef.
The salmon and beef were very tender and tasty but got cold quickly with the air conditioning. Can't help that because it was really hot and humid outside. The white fish was incredibly dry! Keiko said it was still quite tasty and she was enjoying it. I think she was just being kind and polite because she only ate half of it. I mentioned it to our server and he took my mother's plate back to the kitchen where they added more sauce to it. They also quickly redid the plate adding more asparagus and potatoes. They really tried to make the customer happy. After that my mom ate all of hers but I know she wasn't impressed.
Despite the disappointing white fish, nothing could diminish the great time we had with our friends who we had fun chatting with because our servers were always cheerful and helpful and the ambiance of the place was quite lovely.
Now then, that said.... and let's completely forget the fact that I'm pre-diabetic. Roy's Melting Hot Chocolate Souffle with raspberry coulis and vanilla ice cream was a huge hit with everyone. It was sinful but we loved every teeny weeny single bite.
Would we go there again? I guess nobody has to worry since we rarely eat at fancy places but I have to say I'd try someplace else first. There are too many other interesting restaurants to try on the island. And the BEST place to eat on the island?... Mom's Kitchen (my mom, that is).
Yes, the white fish was over cooked. It should have been done medium. Did you like the edamame followed by the warm, damp cloth to clean your hands? I thought that was a nice touch!

ReplyDeleteNothining like Mom's cooking is there? My Mom was a splendid cook and no one could beat the incredible meals she put on the table in my eyes. Sounds like you had a wonderful time though. We often say when we have not had such an impressive meal out, that the company was the most important thing. Glad you had a great time with your friends.

Denise: I think what made it especially great was the service. That was EXCELLENT. They were very helpful and discreet about making sure my husband got the check.

Peggy: Tif was appalled that everything was not perfect because she loves Roy's in Chicago and our food (what we had there) was terrific. I confess we had the chocolate souffle there, too.
What a lovely compliment to your Mom! Sometimes home is best! It is nice to go out to a nice restaurant sometimes though.

ReplyDeleteGoodness, that seems expensive even for Hawaii, but I'm glad you enjoyed the company and the dessert.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid I am often bothered by businesses that are too cold. It is a particular problem in places that get quite hot. It is funny to watch people, in 100 degree weather, carrying sweaters to grocery stores or movie theaters.
Our mothers are pretty hard to compete with, aren't they? I'm still thinking about your mother's crab casserole.
It sounds like a lovely time together; I'm glad the desserts were so good, to help make up for the disappointment in the fish.

Sherri: I agree. I do like to go out sometimes but I'm thinking more money does not always mean better food.

Jo: I thought it was rather high myself but it did include the appetizers and dessert.
Susan: There was validated valet parking and not far to walk so I was pretty fine. Everybody there was so nice. You just have to not order that white fish.

ReplyDeleteThose big shark teeth from another time, made that sharp the one who ate the great whites for lunch and anything else they wanted. It is hard to even think of something weighing 70 tons and being 60 feet long with a mouth that opened wider than most city blocks.
Not to scare you or anything but they loved to roam around where you live. Not sure your place was even there then but they were.

ReplyDeleteOkay... I'm thinkin next time you ought to eat a meal prepared by you and your mom on the patio at home, and then head out to Roy's for dessert. My family loves to go out for decadent desserts. The waiters don't always like it when that's all you order... but, we surprise them with a BIG tip and it all ends well.
ReplyDeleteI do appreciate that eating at "Mom's kitchen" would mean more work for you and your sweet mother... but, the food would have been better, and the price substantially less. Ahhh well, I guess we all have to splurge now and then, eh?
Sounds like you didn't let dry fish dampen the evening in any way.

ReplyDeleteHi Kay! It has been too long since I have visited, but I enjoyed catching up on the trip. Loved the flower photos, was sorry to hear about the broken foot. The only thing I've broken (on my body) is my fingernails! Oh and I got my ears pierced again, so now I have two holes. I'm such a rebel!
My friend and I go to a place in the city just for dessert, called Marie Belle, they have a chocolate lava cake, they serve it with orange sauce and cream sauce, each in their own little bowls, it is to die for.
