The Travels of Father and Son

I do believe that one of Art's favorite trips was without me. It's true. It was in January of 2002. My son, Jon was in Mali as a Peace Corps Volunteer. Art was retired and wanting to see and experience the adventures that our son wrote about. I was teaching and couldn't leave for a month to go off to Africa. Granted, I wasn't exactly needing to go once I heard about the toilets being a hole in the ground, about mosquitoes carrying malaria, and the joy of roughing it. The most I want to rough it is Motel 6, thank you.

Instead, while Art was gone, I tackled below zero weather in the Midwest with record snowfalls. The neighbors had to push my car out into the street so that I could get to school. OK... never mind. That's another story.

Jon met Art in Mali's capital city of Bamako and then took him to his home village near Koutiala. Art loved every single minute and enjoyed meeting the people of the village as well as the other Peace Corps Volunteers when Jon threw a fete for him.

On one memorable outing Jon took Art for a boat trip on the river. Art was amazed at all the birds he saw around him and tried to take some photos from the leaking boat.

Don't these look like pigeons?

Back at the village they saw a few of these guinea hens. They're not pets. They're food.

After a few days they traveled to Tanzania to climb Kilimanjaro (Remember what I said about Motel 6?) and go on a safari where they saw this golden crowned crane.

I do believe these must be ostriches.

Nope, no idea what this is.

Jon chided me later for not coming another time when school was not in session. I do think they had a much better time without me holding them back. In this instance, it was a good trip for father and son.

  1. wow, how tall is your son? He towers over Art.

Gorgeous pics of the birds, many of which I have never seen in person.

I'm like you: so NOT into roughing it.

  9. What a great adventure for Art and kudos to Jon for his service. The photos are grand!

And yeah, my ex used to say my idea of roughing it was a Holiday Inn with a black and white TV. As usual he was wrong and surprised when I took my Girl Scout troop camping for a weekend.

  10. Oh, yes! What a marvelous trip/experience for them both! Now, that is bonding at it's best! I have friends -- my former boss and his wife, who volunteer in Tanzinia. They come home for a few months and go right back again. Don't think I'd be up to that although I would love to visit Africa.

I'm very happy for both Jon and Art! Had to be a terrific experience for them!

    Have a good week!

  13. What an exotic trip and adventure, lovely photos as well. I know what you mean, about the facilities (or lack thereof) for people like us, Kay! Although, being stuck in the snow may be worse (or it's the evil that we know).

  14. While I do love the pics, I'm not sure I would have been adventurous enough to get them in person either.

  17. Fathers and sons have such a different relationship from mothers and sons, and so often they don't have as much time to develop it as the father is so often working longer hours. So it must have been good for them to have such a wonderful time together. One of my best memories of my father is towards the end of his life when we climbed a mountain together. We had rarely had such a long time with just the two of us and it was magical.

  18. Thank you for all your sweet comments, everybody.

Gigi asked how tall Jon is since he seemed to tower over Art. Art says Jon was standing on the higher part of the hill and may have been tiptoeing. :-D I'll just say that Jon is ummmmm... a few inches taller than his father.

  21. Holy cow, what an amazing place. I laughed out loud at 'no idea what this is'!

A co-worker of mine once invited me over her house for the afternoon and I had to say no, I was going camping. She looked stunned for a moment, then shouted, "OUTSIDE??!" I laughed and laughed.

But I could *never* go up Kilimanjaro I think!! And with every year I appreciate the little comforts more. Like beds.

  24. What a great adventure for a Dad and his son..I love all the birds, but I too would not do too well with all those challenges.. Your hubby is a true adventurer who passed it down to his son....
