Gave Myself a Haircut

I keep my hair pretty short these days but somehow every so often, it begins to bother me and I have to trim it back further. This is often a risky proposition since I never know how it's going to end up. However, since I'm doing it to myself there's nobody else to blame if I don't like it. My three way mirror helps me see my back but that's no garantee. Art usually checks what I can't see to correct any massive damage I might do.

Through the years my hair has gotten shorter and shorter.

I had long hair and Art had no hair (under his nose, that is) when we met.

This would be around 1972 when Art and I were engaged.

When Jon was born in 1978 my hair had gotten a little shorter. He was about a month old when this was taken. I often tease Jon that he also added gray hairs to my head through the years.

1991: I was teaching, the kids kept growing, Art sprouted something under his nose and my hair length inched upward.

One of my teacher friends, Joan told me a long time ago that I would look best with my hair either long or in a boy cut. I was aghast! A boy cut? Never! Instead, I kept it at the medium length for the longest time.

When Art saw me hacking away at my hair yesterday, his eyebrows shot up and he said, "Hmmm... pretty short, hunh?" Actually he says that almost everytime I give myself a hair cut. True, my hair is now shorter than his. I wonder what Joan would think.

  1. I like your short hair-it makes you a modern woman...great you can cut your own hair. My hubby cuts his with a mirror also and does a better job than the barber shop. I trim mine but have to get more help every few months. You look cute...

  2. haha! But you look GOOD with short hair!!! Unlike me. I look better with long hair reaching my waist, but nowadays, my hair is so thin and straggly that I have to cut it short.

You really do look GREAT, Kay!!!

  3. This is the haircut for you. This kind of haircut takes years off of some of us. After 40 I prefer short hair for womrn.

My hair is very short now. I have fine, limp hair. It didn't like Organ rain so I cut it off. It's so easy to care for now. I can.t imagine going back to hair I have to fuss with.

    Love your new header.

  8. I'm very impressed by your haircutting skills, I would not dream of attempting it myself, I have a hard enough time with my bangs. Your cut is great! One thing I tell myself alot is that I earned each and every one of my gray hairs! Love the cheery header photo.

  13. Your hair looks really good like that; exactly like I wear mine! Though I'd never dare to trim it myself, we have a hairdresser who comes to the house every six weeks to trim both my hair and Christopher's.

  14. I am not brave enough to cut my own hair, but like you,I have gone from long to short hair. I used to fuss way too much with my hair. When I finally went to a boy cut,it was so freeing. I like having it quick and easy. I have a haircut appointment tomorrow, as a matter of fact.

  15. Your hair looks wonderful short (not everyone can pull that length off). I like it long, too. Nice that you can be versatile.

  17. Your hair looks nice -- congratulations on being able to cut it yourself! I'd love to do something with my hair but have so many cowlicks it's usually a disaster.

Your t-shirt in the photo is the cutest thing!

  18. "Huh, pretty short huh!" and I am laughing because that's a man for you. I've heard that from Gregg many times over the years. Your hair cut looks great. I am impressed that you did it yourself and I also loved all the family pictures over the years. You are a beautiful family inside and out :)

  19. Thank you, everybody. My head feels a lot lighter now. However, I keep feeling like I should wear a little make-up to make sure I look like a girl. LOL

Susan: Ahhh... you noticed that t-shirt. It was given to me by a parent of an ADD HD child who I just loved. He had such a sense of humor... and energy. The t-shirt says, "I will not yell in class. I will not throw things in class. I will not get mad and hit anyone in class. I will not have a temper tanrum, and I will always be good, because I am the teacher, I am the teacher,. I am the teacher..."

This parent came to me several times throughout the years to tell me how well her child did as he got older. He ended up with almost all A's by the time he was ready for high school! Yae! Gosh! I can still see his smile.
