I've been buried under a pile of old photos, scanning from daybreak to nightfall. I can't seem to help myself. I'm now discovering wonderful treasures of the past in photos from Art's side of the family. When Art's mom passed away, all her photos were passed down to us.
I resurfaced today for the 4th and realized I was missing being back in Illinois where our little village would have their own 4th of July parade.
Tiffany was not yet 1 year old when we marched with her.
It was 1976, the bicentennial and surprisingly, they awarded Tiffany "Honorable Mention."
I loved living there. Our little village of almost a hundred homes was a friendly community with our own board, our own little newsletter and phone book, our own babysitting pool. There was such a feeling of connection between all the neighbors. I'm glad Tif now lives there with her family.
Peggy of Meggie's Musings lived two doors down from me. Our children played together and we were part of a large group of neighborhood moms who supported each other and became fast friends.
We didn't do much today. I hear firecrackers going off in the distance. Next year, I really think we need to go some place and truly celebrate.
Wait, I just looked out the window and saw fireworks going off at Pearl Harbor. Art took this shot out our window. Hmmmm.... not bad.

ReplyDeleteYou should compare notes with Susan re photo books. In one of her blog comments, she mentioned that her photo book, which she sent away for, cost just $10. That's awfully cheap! I wonder how she did that! Were the photos already in there or was it a blank book?

Israel radio just broadcast Aaron Copland's "A Lincoln Portrait." It is so moving and strong. It brought me tears. It reminded me why I love America.

we had a quiet fourth also, did talk by phone with two of my sons. will see them all next weekend for a family reunion. fun memories come with photos-thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteVillage celebrations are always such good fun, surrounded by people that you know. I'd much prefer a low key village celebration to an expensive city celebration. That's a great photograph that Art took.

ReplyDeleteAh, such sweet photos of the children all ready for the Fourth of July parades. I would love to live in such a community as you did, sounds wonderful. It must be so comforting to know that your family is living there! The photo Art took was great!
ReplyDeleteYou would have loved the celebration at Volcano Village on the Big Island. The Hilo Fireworks were modest but fun to watch from our deck.
ReplyDeleteI get the feeling that Honolulu living is not much like living here. Honolulu has the city amenities, but it is so crowded!

ReplyDeleteI grew up outside a small town and we had a parade, a rodeo, and fireworks. It was great. Now daughter Jill lives in a small town where the neighboring small town has a parade, a rodeo and fireworks! We did spend two July Fourths with them a while back, and it was lots of fun, but way too hot there in Eastern Colorado.

ReplyDeleteOur neighborhood sounded like it exploded last night, with all the fireworks. People went nuts (I loved it!)
Susan: I've been lucky in many things in my life, but not all. There were many things I had to deal with and oversome. However, I think I gained strength from it to make a better life for myself.
ReplyDeleteWell, I didn't see anything as great as Pearl Harbor fireworks! But there were some home fireworks down the road that we could see above the trees on our land. Just what I like- pretty without the tremendous noise. :<)
