Christmas in 1948

I'm afraid you're going to be seeing a lot of old photos because my life is a mountain of photos and my scanner.

Here's a photo that caught my eye right away. For one thing it's colorized from around 1948. Art's older sister, Kay is Mary. Art is next to her as one of the wise men.

I was puzzled because Art's family has always been Buddhist. Why are they in a nativity scene? Could it be a public school show?

When I asked Art, he said, no, it wasn't a school play. A family friend asked them to pose for the photo and then gave them a copy.

I love this photo. The children all look so sweet... even Art. Juuuust kidding...

In fact, I'm thinking Tiffany looks sort of like him. Looking at all these photos... I keep seeing resemblances. This is really addictive.

  2. Oh, so cuuuute! Kay, if I were you, I'd be looking at my Christmas card for this year -- it's just irresistible.

I need to do the same project, but I just dread it; we've got so many photos. So MANY photos....!

  3. He is Buddhist and he's in a Xmas photo? I guess that must be really common in public elementary schools. But, as far as I know, no Buddhist parent has ever vehemently protested. That's Hawaii...

  4. Gigi: No, it's not a school show. It was a family friend (actually, somebody who worked at Art's dad's soda fountain-restaurant) who asked to borrow the kids for the shot.

Susan: I was really, really dreading this, too. In fact, I knew I'd have to do this for the past 10 years or so but just couldn't get myself to start. However, now that I've started, I'm consumed by it.

Mare: Awww... Mare... you have no idea what you're in for. There's so much!

  8. Lovely photo!
In our schools, children are always involved in the Nativity plays and tableaux - Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists. Parents may withdraw them if they wish but I've never known that happen.
(Mind you, the children get mixed up between angels and fairies . . . )

  11. I have a lot of photo scanning to do but I'm sure I won't get into mine the way you have. Enjoy yourself. Your children will bless you for doing this and some day KC will bless you.

  12. I have to admit, I giggle when seeing how the old masters painted Biblical people in medieval European clothes.
But I've never seen Japanese faces portraying the "Holy Family"! Art's sister looks more pure and tender than any madonna I've seen.
But Art somehow reminds me of a miniature Samurai in this photo. :)

(In the late 90s Heifer Ranch always made me dress up as Mary for the Living Nativity. But that's only because I was the donkey caretaker and the jenny would let me sit on her back for two hours. Oi )

  13. Such a delightful photo Kay. This is what I love about going through all the old family snapshots, you find such treasures. Maybe the lady who asked them to pose wanted a Christmas Card? This would make a really neat one. I remember when I was 13 having a pen-friend from the States. Their Christmas card to me was of their whole family. I had never seen anything like personal photos on cards like this before. I thought it was so cool and very, very interesting. I haven't thought of that card in years.
