I found something interesting amidst all of my mother-in-law's photos. Some very old 1935 copyright postcards. This was the folding type of 9 cards with 18 photos front and back.
The first thing that caught my eye was the postage price to send this thick stack of cards. It says 1 1/2 cents. Did they actually have a half cent stamp?
I guess they took black and white photos and painted them in.
And of course, Waikiki certainly no longer looks like that. It's now a mass of hotels. Other things have changed along with the price of postage stamps.
Those are very interesting. I have some old turn of the century valentines to scan.
ReplyDeleteOld post cards are fun. Tom has some that were sent to or from his grandmother and grandfather and some of thier friends when they were courting in the early 1900's. He was a railroad engineer and would send messages from various stops along his route. Because they are written on with personal messages, they are fun to read. He even has some leather post cards.

ReplyDeleteDina: Yes, I do miss the old Hawaii I grew up on. Oahu has really changed! Completely! The place where I lived has been totally bulldozed, leveled and a subdivision sits on it. You can't even find markers to indicate where our house was. Traffic is horrendous and tall buildings everywhere in Waikiki. Sigh...
ReplyDeleteI love these post cards Kay. Each time I came back from Hawaii I bought with me a load of postcards, some reproductions of vintage ones. These remind me of those.
