I've just finished reading Michael Crichton's State of Fear. When I mentioned to my son, Jon that I'd bought the book at the book sale and was looking forward to reading it, he said, "Why are you wanting to read a right wing propaganda book?Well... For one thing, I didn't know anything about it except that I've enjoyed all of Michael Crichton's books.
What a surprise to see he'd written a book completely discrediting global warning, environmental groups and environmentalists. And then he had one scene in the book that had me rather unable to get to sleep.
It was an interesting and entertaining book when he wasn't spending so much time sermonizing how environmentalists and biased researchers have it all wrong.
Did any of you read this? What did you think?
I haven't read it; haven't read any Crichton, in fact. I think this would be my last choice if I were to read one of his books, though, after hearing your comments on it!

ReplyDeleteI've read most of his books and always enjoyed them and I'm surprised to learn his take on the environment etc. Disappointing to say the least and not what I would have expected from him. Interesting! Hope you have a fun weekend, Kay! Enjoy!

I've read his memoir, TRAVELS, as well as some of his fiction, and enjoyed them all. (Not STATE OF FEAR.)
ReplyDeleteEspecially TRAVELS. He writes about his medical school training and graduating with an M.D., and how and why he gradually switched to writing full time. (He hated the sight of blood.)
I wish I were half as successful as he was.
I understand that his last, unfinished novel will be published soon.
I don't think I've read any of his books, but this one would be low on my list. How could anyone not believe in our environmental crises?

ReplyDeleteI have always enjoyed M.C. books Sad that he has taken a position but that's his freedom.
There are many out there that have ralied against the global warming cause lately. Falsefied reports and data, it's too bad. Hurts the cause.
I believe that it exists, both becuase of man and because of the cycles of the earth.
We have to do our part though to prevent what we can.
I don't think reading both sides of an issue does harm. It fires you up!

ReplyDeleteI havent read it Kay but I think I would like to. Its such a big subject isnt it? Who do we believe? Not sure I would agree with him though. Love it that you shocked your son on your choice of reading material. Its good to shake them up every now on then about who they think their parents are, he he. Keeps them on their toes.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any of his books. It is interesting when a fiction writer suddenly interjects his own personal political point of view into a novel. Makes you wonder if the other books had a bias.
