Decision #3 (Treadmill): Done!

Yes! We did manage to make another decision to complete our move to Hawaii. We bought a Precor treadmill from Total Fitness USA in Honolulu. We considered an elliptical, but it once hurt my knees and I thought the movement would be too difficult for my mother.

We liked the Precor because it has a 1 year labor and 10 year parts warranty built in. We didn't have to buy an extra plan.

It was delivered yesterday. When I saw the guys checking out the directions, I had to ask if they'd put one together before.

They laughed and assured me that they had.

We opted to get the one with handlebars just to be on the safe side when mom gets on.

The guys really got done in likety split and made sure it was in working order.

We showed mom how to work the buttons and she tried it out. Now she'll be able to get some exercise even when it rains! We're planning to use it, too.

Art's worried this exercise machine will end up as a clothes hanger like my Nordic track ski machine. Do you have an exercise machine? Do you use it regularly? Tell the truth, now.

POSTSCRIPT: When I went down for breakfast this morning, Art said mom had already gone on the treadmill and proudly proclaimed that she logged on 13 miles!!!

"What??? Holy cow! Are you serious?" I nearly fell down.

"Kay, that's half a marathon."

"I know," I said, "getting quite worried.

"She was really sweating," Art said with a smile (or was that a smirk?). "Think," he told me.

Uh oh! I get it. She had actually walked 13 minutes and didn't think to put the fan on overhead. I told her she should use the air conditioner, even though I know she hates artificially cooled air. However, she agreed she definitely would next time.

I'm glad the solar panels will be installed in November. I wish it were tomorrow since we'll be using extra energy.

  1. Kay, wow you are just making decision left and right this week aren't you-LOL!!! Good for you and good for your Mom for even walking for 13 minutes! Good luck with the treadmill!

  2. That's a serious looking piece of kit, just like those you find at the gym. I've often wondered how much home exercise machines get used once the novelty wears off, so it will be interesting to see what happens with yours. We've just joined our local leisure centre, so plan to get fitter by using the gym, the swimming pool and going to some classes. I wonder how long we'll last!

  3. Wow, decision making could get to be a habit. What would you do then?

I thought about a tread mill but didn't for two reasons, (1) not enough space for one, (2) knowing me, it would become a clothes hanger.

It's possible I might make it a daily habit but I don't trust myself. I'm going to see how many days of rain we have this winter. I might reconsider.

I also have a Wii-Fit and haven't done very well making myself use it every day.

The Nordic Track was a beast. We had one. I would think that one would be out of the question for your mom.

Good luck on this new adventure.

  4. I have a NordicTrak which I haven't used in years. I hate the thing. Such unbearable monotony!

But I suspect, maybe naively, but I hope not, that I'd actually use a treadmill. I mean, it's just walking, right? I love to walk. The key would be to watch t.v. or something while using it.

  5. Don't forget to tell your mom to use jogging shoes to prevent accidents on the treadmill. They are required at 24 Hr Fitness, for good reasons.

We bought a treadmill from Sports Authority in the 1990s, but gave it away about 2 years later for lack of use.

    Good luck with yours!

  6. How funny! Bless her heart. I've thought about getting one of those for those cold winter days when I can't run. But right now $$$ is too tight. Hope you enjoy it.

  7. Gigi: Yes, thank you, Gigi. I did provide her with a clean pair of gym shoes to use when she's on the treadmill. She just tried it for a few seconds yesterday when I took the photo in her bare feet since we don't wear shoes in the house.

  10. We had a Precor treadmill and after Barry had to stop running we gave it to our eldest daughter. We now have a cross-trainer which I rarely use and Barry uses regularly along with the rowing machine and various other bits and pieces. I just walk the dogs and swim.

  11. Yep, that sea lion smile was the nicest thing about that photo. Glad you liked it.

Exercise equipment seems to be required because people have reached the stage where they have too much free time. Washing clothes used to be a whole day affair when I was growing up. From heating the water on the kitchen cook stove to pumping it out of the deep well and then writing out the clothes and then rinsing them and then hanging them outside on the clothes line to dry and bringing them in and folding them in preparation for ironing the next day. Tuesday was ironing clothes day. It took all day and the iron was heated on the same kitchen cookstove.

Two days of hard work out of your week. Killing and dressing a chicken for dinner took some hours work or more. Peeling and boiling and mashing potatoes, and making some brown gravy and finding cans of vegetables under the bed to go with the meal was about all mother could get some in one day with all the other stuff she had to do.

Walking everywhere. No bikes. Just two feet. It was the same for everyone. Nobody got fat or died of high cholesterol and we all used lard in frying and in soap making.

The same for the man except he spent hours cutting or mowing weeds with a hand scythe. Shelling corn. Mowing hay. Cutting and threshing wheat. Cleaning out the horse stalls and cow stalls and spreading that fertilizer all over the fields. From dawn to dark every day some of the hardest work in the world.

My point is we didn't need a treadmill. Treadmills are for people locked up in apartments. The dog whisperer has dogs using them because the dogs can't get enough exercise. Most of us in the little towns across America don't have them but I did have one because of my aortic aneurysm surgery and I used it until I was well enough to ride a bicycle and then it started taking up room. And then I gave it away and it rusted away in the shed of the people I gave it too.

  12. The story about your Mom made me laugh.

We once had a rowing machine that we used twice and then fell over for the next two years. We also had an exercise bike that saw more use but was eventually abandoned. Dogs are the best exercise machines because they insist that you walk them every day and you can't throw a coat over them to ignore them.

  13. Aww that is so sweet about your mom! If nothing else your grand-daughter will love it when she comes to visit! I remember as a kid visiting my Grandma's friend and riding her stationary bike most of the visit! I loved that thing!

  14. That is quite a machine, all right. Oh, and congratulations on the solar!!!
My forms of exercise are water aerobics, ocean swimming, yoga, and yard work. I do have an elliptical, which I hop onto from time to time.
I think the key to sticking with an exercise regime is finding something that is fun and varied. And for me, at any rate, exercising in groups keeps me motivated.

  15. Oh that is cute. Wish The Hubby would let me get a treadmill. I use the one at the trainer place and I may have to insist sometime.

  17. I'm glad your mom can use it. Knowing a little bit about her, I bet she will too!
I've been away for a few days, but I have to get back on my stationary bike (borrowed) and my Nordic Track. I worked in the garden up at Whidbey two days so that was my exercise, plus my regular stretching routine. I got a cortisone shot for my heel, but it didn't help, so I'm still restricted from exercise walking.

I do have to say that the Nordic track is a killer, but it sure gives a good workout.
