Naming Our Children

A while ago, Wil of Reader Wil wrote a post about how different cultures name their children.  My mother has always told me how she wasn't exactly thrilled about how I was named.  Apparently, while she was unconscious after giving birth to me two months prematurely, my father's family took it upon themselves to name me without consulting her.  She was only 19 with no family of her own here in Hawaii.

Mom says my Aunt Sally thought Kay would be good because it was short since my last name was so long.  She said it was a beautiful name because it was a diminutive of Katherine.  My guess is they were probably thinking Katherine Hepburn.  Since Aunt Sally is supposed to be the brains in the family, I think they all figured she must be right.

I was unhappy with my name when I was young because you couldn't do anything cute with it.  For a while there, some friends were turning it around and calling me "Yak."  OK... maybe I talked too much.

You can imagine my surprise when I discovered Art's sister's name was Kay too.  I thought that was great even though people called her Kay Ann.  I still don't know why.

When our children were born,  I was determined that they would have longer names to play with.  Art and I struggled with choosing a name that would embody characteristics that would make our children happy.  We were really enchanted with Tiffany glass in the 70's.  We loved all the gorgeous colors and Art was attempting to make his own Tiffany lamp.  He never did finish that project, but we named our daughter after the beautiful glass.

I wonder if that's why Tif had an affection for the store of that name.  For their wedding cake (as a joke), you'll notice the cake was in the shape of Tiffany boxes.  I always shorten Tiffany's name to Tif because I don't like the fact that Tiff means a little fight.  Tif never likes to fight.  She is usually a conciliator.

We named Jonathan after Jonathan Livingston Seagull.  When we told him that we named him after the bird, he was not thrilled.  However, when I read the story to him, he was very pleased.  He's been living up to his name also, striving to stretch his wings as far as they will take him.  Frankly, it drives me crazy.  He's broken both his arms as a child and gone everywhere around the world.  I would like him to stay put in one place and lead a "normal" life.

Sigh....

I guess  you can name your children, but you can't control them.

Oh, and about my name... now that I've met other bloggers named Kay, I rather like it!

  2. And I prefer DJan to Jan, although the D is my first initial, the name Jan is pretty boring by itself. You gave me a good idea for a blog post, how I got my names.

  3. I have never gone by my real first name and don't really like when I have to use if for legal things. I think Kay is a great name.

  4. Naming your children I'm sure has always been hard. I always loved the name Megan so our first born is named Megan (John loved the name too!). Jennifer on the other hand was harder because we thought we were having a boy. When Jenny was born I wanted to name her Laurel, which I thought was a beautiful name. John thought different his exact words were, "I don't want my daughter named after a shrub"! So we came up with Jennifer. We always call her Jenny or Jen and it truly fits her! Both girls love their names so I guess we did good!

  5. fun stories...My first son was named after his father Frank-a family tradition, the second after a friend Daniel, the third we were looking for a nature name. Hubby wanted running water Hatch was our last name but I wanted Brook-that won. My last son was named after the president of my alma mater who is now an apostle in our church Jeffrey Holland. I was named after Linda Darnell a movie actress in the 1940s...but I shortened it to Lin

  6. Interesting post. I chose my son's middle name when I saw the headlines for the day, "Warren Comission Reports. . ." He was born in March after the Kennedy assassination in November.

  7. I can sympathize. My mothers name was Cecelia which is a beautiful name and her large family all called her Sissy, which she hated, so she didn't want any nicknames for us. I thought Lynn was the most boring name in the world, nothing cute to do with it. I wanted a cute nickname. Hence my kids are Jennifer (Jenny), Rebecca (Becky) and Benjamin (Ben).

  8. My kids mostly have family names.

However, I have always been "into" history so my kids Richard and John are named after English kings, although they had uncles with the same names.

The boys thought they were named for those two guys who ran for President in 1960. I told Richard NO, NO, NO. My son Richard is as nutty about history but his sons are named Jacob and Sean, also family names.

Connie is named for Constantine the first Christian Roman Emperor, although her Dad thought I named her after the singer Connie Francis. Also, I knew a guy at church with that name and liked him very much, although his wife Oline thought I was strange. At least I didn't name Connie Oline.

Connie's girls are named Hannah, Amelia (Emily in English), Rita and Hosanna Joy. Connie was in her "Born Again Christian" phase when she named them.

The moral of this story is be careful what you name your kids. You did a great job with yours, and I love the Tiffany boxes. Dianne

  10. ...or you could just do it like they did in Day of the Dolphin, just name the first one Alpha, then Beta, etc.

WHAT is it with kids' names nowadays???!!! Some insecure parent has ALWAYS gotta twist the spelling and tweak the name to give it an 'individual' character, so all the Crystals end up with Chyrstahl or Kristal or I've seen Krystl. Hmmph. I bet the last name is, like, Meth?

    Bah humbug. It's monday.

  11. ok ok ok ok. So EVEN in Day of the Dolphin they babied them up a bit. The dolphins couldn't say 'alpha' so it became sorta 'faaaa' when they said it, and 'beta' became 'bbeeeee'.

We named our daughter AJA, which is an acronym for Americans of Japanese Ancestry and used to be a common general use monicker during WWII applied to the interned Japanese in the camps. It's also a really good song by Steely Dan.

    My father was named HENRY
    I am named HENRY.
    My son is named HENRY.
    Whaddyagonna do?
I'm not even crazy about the name. It seems old-fashioned to me. But I identify strongly with my nickname--Hank--which I was given at birth. And I have the photograph to prove it.

  14. Your poor little mother. How frightened she must have been. And look now how wonderful things are for her now, in no small measure because of all you do for her.
I am named after my grandmother, Marianna Stella. She died long before I was born.

  17. I still love long feminine names for girls...Elizabeth, Catherine, Christina...but I am just plain Sharon Kay and have always been called Kay. The only thing bad about it now though is this: sometimes people on cell phones will say "Kay" instead of "okay" and I will think they are speaking to me! Has this happened to you?
    Love,
    Kay (another one!)

  21. I wanted to change my name as a child. It is Carla and it upset my mother to no end. I finally figured out that I liked it and besides there were only two in school (my class), one of which is no longer with us.

My girls, Briana and Afton, I love. Briana is a mixture of my brother and sister names, Brian and Dana. They loved it. My grandmother wanted me to have it legally changed to Brianna, I refused! Afton is The Hubby's father's first name and I so love it.

  22. Kay is a good name!!! :) It's really my middle name but a lot of people know me by it and I answer to it. (I also think it suits me better!) I really don't like my first name but I guess my parents did.

Glad you and I share our name and hope that one day that I'm as upbeat and sweet as you!!!!

  25. I don't know if I was named 'for' anyone, but I do know that there were, and still are, lots of Linda's about my age.
We had trouble with names for our kids because as teachers we had a lot of names that were no longer acceptable, you know, as in, we were trying very hard to FORGET that kid!
Jill is still not that common, but now Jacob is the most popular boys name. It wasn't in 1975.

  26. So love this post Kay. That wedding cake is amazing. I named my daughter after one of the characters in the Great Gatsby. And yes this whole spreading your wings is great BUT eventually they settle down don't they? Hope he is safely out of Columbia.
