Two Months of Bad News

It's getting so I'm almost afraid to pick up the phone when it rings.  Each ring seems like a harbinger of bad news.

In the last TWO months we've had too many crises... one after the other.

Art's cousin, Ethel passed away and we attended the funeral.
Art lost two of his high school classmates on the same day.
My cousin, Joan had a stroke and I'm relieved and ecstatic that she is recovering well.
My cousin, Janice who is about the same age as me passed away from a heart attack.
One of Art's nicest cousins, Sarah passed away after a long illness.
My cousin's husband, Paul passed away suddenly last week.

The interesting thing is that each death has brought us in contact with family members and friends we haven't seen in a long, long time and helped us to reconnect.

It is a terrible anguish, but I like to think of our departed loved ones smiling to know that everyone came together again in their remembrance.

I'm hoping desperately that with spring now here, winter sadness can begin to melt away.

POSTSCRIPT:  Thank you so much for all your kind words, everybody.  Mom says it's not over yet since I have several more relatives in ill health right now.  It's a very somber time for us.

  1. My condolences, Kay and Art. It's sad to say good-bye to loved ones, but know they are in a happy place right now. Yes, I do believe in the spiritual world where God resides.

  2. Oi oi, that is way too much loss and bad news in two months. We have Hebrew blessings to say to people in this situation: "May you know no more troubles" and "May you hear only good news." I say that to you now, Kay and Art.

  3. What a lot of sadness you've had. But we've noticed how lovely it is to get together with friends and families at funerals, and we always say 'let's not leave it so long', but we always do.

  6. Not to mention the scare you had over your own health, that is a lot of sadness within a short period. I'm so sorry for your loss, and Art's, but I am very glad you were able to reconnect with other loved ones.

  12. What a lot of bad news! However, it's part of life.

About five years ago I had quite a few friends (who were in their 40s) lose their parents (who were in their 70s and 80s). I kept a supply of sympathy cards on hand.

  13. Oh Kay, I'm sorry. It's been a year of substantial losses for us as well.

And that gardenia is beautiful!! Nice to have something to look at and smell that brings such joy. :)

  15. I am so sorry for your many losses, piling one on top of the other. It is devastating. 2011 was the year of loss here. Give your self time to grieve and to heal. Process the pain and go through it. This is also a good time to reassess one's life and activities.

  16. Oh my, that's a lot of loss in just two months time. Sounds like it's time for some family births, a time to rejoice over new life.

  17. Too many, too soon. I used to think of the older generation passing on; now we are the older generation.

  18. Definitely too many, Kay. I sometimes have trouble remembering that my siblings and I are now the older generation in our immediate family, and Dick, whose brother and sister have both died, is the only one in his. However, last month one of my mother's cousins died a week short of his 90th birthday.
I'm very sorry for the losses you and Art have suffered.

  20. Goodness, that is a piling on of sadness. As we reach our older years we can expect to attend more funerals and share more sorrow, but you need a break, for sure.

  27. With families so spread out, unfortunately or not, important occasions such as deaths, and marriage bring us together again. At our age, the former is more often the cause. Dianne
