Word Verification

Now that I'm having to put up the Word Verification thing for a bit, I thought I'd really look at how it works.

I've noticed several times that even if I miss a letter on other blogs, my comment will still get published.

Now Cloudia of Comfort Spiral has told me that even if you leave off the numbers, it will still work.  I tried it and it's true. No kidding!

Another thing that's good to remember is that if the set of letters is too difficult to read, just click on that circular icon next to it and it will give you a different set of letters.  I've done that and it makes it a lot easier and less aggravating.

Thank you for bearing with me on this.  It is such a lovely thing to not get any more SPAM.

And by the way, if you'd ever like to add a "reply" to a comment that someone else made on one of my posts, please do so (kindly and respectfully as always, of course) because I love it when people have a conversation on any post I write.

  1. These are great tips Kay. I know it can be pretty frustrating and this post will help a lot. I also know that spam can be very frustrating. Mine has lessened considerably so I hope yours will too eventually.

  2. Glad to get these tips, Kay.

  3. Yes, Blogger is getting spammed a lot. I do not yet use it, but I am not so popular that I get more than one or two spams a week. If the post is older than 10 days than I set up moderation. Hopefully Blogger will get its act together.

    1. I set up moderation for posts older than 7 days and also mark any Spam I got, but it didn't do enough good. Therefore this is a last resort for a while.

  4. Thanks for this most useful info Kay!

  5. Yep, works without the numbers Yay!

  6. I didn't know about the numbers

  7. Hi Kay -- Thanks for the refresher lesson. When I forward news items to my son, I'm usually asked to do the word and/or number thing. If they're hard to read or guess, it usually lets me send the item, but sometimes gives me another set to "guess." I'd noticed I could be incorrect on one or two characters and it would still forward the item. I sure don't want to create spam.
The only SPAM I like is with the masubi from your local spots. "The Pearl Harbor Child" author, Dorinda M. Nicholson, says SPAM stands for "South Pacific Army Meat," since so much was left in military supplies after WWII.

  8. I think this is great information!, lots of which I didn't know. I suspected it might be true that the numbers could be left off, but I wasn't sure. Thanks for this! :-)

  9. Good tips on word verification, Kay. It is a pain, but I know it is necessary sometimes. I get way more spam these days and it is irritating.

  10. I do not hardly get any spam (knock on wood). I have lots of viewers but not as many comments. I use Blogger's option to mark the annoying comments as spam when I do get one and that removes it. Word verification is the pits but if I got a lot of spam I would probably use it too. Thanks for the tips to shorten some of the steps for using WV.

    1. I've marked all the Spams I got but it was still ridiculous. I was getting about 7 or 8 getting through everyday.

  11. Great pointers. I'll try getting a new one. My eyesight is really poor and I can't read those dang things. So often I just trash the whole comment and forget about it. I get a little spam but not very much, really.

    1. Manzanita -- It's not your eyesight. Those verification things are really warped on the letters, and the numbers are VERY fuzzy or FADED. I just guess and usually get through to publish the response. DrumMajor

  12. I can almost never read the numbers so this is a good tip. I suspected this was the case (not including the numbers) because I have done it a time or two. But I always save what I've written, just in case I have to re-enter it. Thanks for stopping by my blog this AM. I love your comments. Dianne

    1. Having said that, I don't mind that you do the word verification thing one bit if that's what it takes. I know I hate getting spam in my email box.

    2. I think most of the Spam is to lure people onto business sites. The other stuff is just generated by people who have a special place in Hell waiting for them.

  14. Wow, thats great! I had no idea! Shame it is the letters bit I can never read, haha! I get so frustrated with the endless CAPTCHAs of blogging that I have started using CAPTCHA bypass software to do the verifications for me. Found one called Rumola (skipinput.com) the other day and it is really good and reliable. Just a tip for all you CAPTCHA haters out there!

    1. Wow! I didn't even know what CAPTCHA meant. I checked Wikipedia which explained it as: "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart". Thank you, Alicia.

  15. Well that is good to know. Spam is so annoying...even more than captcha.

    1. WordPress catches the spammers. I don't even see those comments unless I go to a special file. Each month I look a the count, and it's usually in the 1000s. I love WordPress.

  16. It seems like Blogger and the other platforms are always trying to stay one step ahead of the spammers. I wonder how long before the spammers figure out the latest word verification process, too.

  17. I'm almost afraid to say I haven't had any spammers lately, for fear they'll sneak in on me and say "aha"!
I have trouble reading small type, and fuzzy type, and have often had my comment bounced back at me. It's all very strange. I know I'm not a robot, but apparently no one else can tell. LOL

  18. I do not like to deal with word verification, so many times just avoid commenting when I have to use it.

    1. Thank you for commenting for me today in spite of it, Annmarie. I'll try taking it off later and see what happens.

    2. I'm like you, AnnMarie, in that if I cannot get the comment posted the first time, I give up and go away. And, Kay, I have never been able to get away with leaving off the number. I wonder if Blogger writers are treated differently than WordPress commenters.

    3. I have a back-up blog to this one in Wordpress and almost no one comments. It's true that I get no spam on Wordpress, but I also don't get comments and I love comments. I'm afraid my cyber family is here on Blogspot.

  19. Once when all this was new I must have hit the speaker icon on the comment thing by mistake, because suddenly I was hearing voices that sounded like from outer space. Spooky.
    Try it, it's fun.

  20. Thanks for the tip!

Word verifications drive me nuts (it's why I didn't add it when my own blog was repeatedly spammed), but I quite understand why bloggers feel the need for it; spam is not fun.

Sorry to read about your neighbours. I hope they are okay now.

    1. It seemed like the Spam was gaining momentum and I was being flooded with it. My neighbors are older and still very shaken up. I feel so awful for them. With so many of their documents stolen, I can see why they'd be upset.

  21. Did you take it off again? It never came up.

    1. Yes, I did take it off just to see if the Spam has lessened a bit. I'll be putting it up intermittently when the Spam drives me nuts again.

    2. Oh nuts!!! I had to put it up again because I started to get spam getting through to actually being posted.
What the heck is going on?

I really LOVE hearing from you! However, if you sign in as ANONYMOUS, please don't forget to tell me who you are in the comment box by just writing your first name. We would all appreciate it if you kept your comment respectful and kind.

I’m using Comment Moderation for any post that is more than a day old because of aggravating SPAM. Therefore, if your comment does not go up on an older (more than a day old) post, it's because I need to OK it first. I'm sorry to have to do this, but again... sigh... it's the spam that's driving me crazy.
