To be perfectly honest, I've been a little frustrated with a few people who have used religion to look down on others and have constantly needed to push their beliefs onto other hearts who were already content with their own.
Why is it so hard to understand that there are other beliefs and that people might be right in thinking it works for them?
Then I received this card from a friend who happens to be Catholic and has always accepted others for the goodness of their hearts rather than any belief system.
I met fellow teacher, Lisa in 1984 and she has been an honest and loving friend ever since.
Her special card made me very happy and filled me with hope for the new year. Actually, I am blessed with a number of friends just like Lisa and wish the world were populated with even more people like them.
The wonderful thing about blogging is that I've come across many more people like Lisa who accept others for the goodness inside and try to break down walls with understanding. I'm so grateful that we are able to reach out to each other anytime we want to and find someone there ready to listen.
Thank you for being my friend.

What an amazing card and what an inspiring message. We too often look at our differences rather than looking at our similarities - it should be the other way around :)

That card would be an all time favorite of mine too. I, like Kathy G, would frame it.
ReplyDeleteI always think that almost any religion would do much the same job, if people approached it the right way. Any true religion embraces the sentiments on the card and preaches it, and true believers know that. It's zealots and bigots who ruin religion, whatever faith they profess.
ReplyDeleteI got a Christmas card last year from a wealthy family (whom I only know through a freind of my daughter's) and in the photo they were all dressed up and standing in front of the tree hunting rifles in hand and smiling. Their newsletter included love of God and admoniitions to get Obama out of office in the next election. I burned the card because I only keep Christmas cards.

ReplyDeleteI have to deal with over-zealous Christians who get mad at Happy Holidays every Christmas. There's a common bumpersticker that says Keep the Christ in Christmas and now I want a bumper sticker that says Keep the Thor in Thursday.
ReplyDeleteOnce worked at place that had banners that had one for each holiday during December. This lady flipped out because she didn't notice the Christmas one, and when we pointed it out to her she was still mad.
My brother sent us a Christmas card with Christ underlined in Christmas very boldly. Overdoing it much?
Then we have the people who say "I ONLY SAY Merry Chirstmas"... yeah that's pretty much like admitting that you don't care about any non-Christians.

ReplyDeleteI'm a Christian --but I hope and pray that I never try to sway anyone else in their beliefs. We do need to accept each other --and not be judgmental... We are all unique and special people.

ReplyDeleteAround here there are few walls. Given my county has the greatest number of immigrants in the US. It's live and let live. I like pope Francis Christmas prayer. We all worship the same Higher power, no matter how we view that pwer with our mortal eyes. Dianne

ReplyDeleteThat's a really sweet card Kay and shows a loving heart, from one to another, and that's what it is all about. We should teach our children love, kindness, tolerance, compassion, and an open mind.

ReplyDeleteIt is truly a beautiful card which shows that your friend is also a beautiful woman. There are many good people around us, but the media often points out the extreme ones. I also feel that religion should be more private, too many people (at least where I live in the South) push it, in-your-face style, and it creates unease.

ReplyDeleteMost forget the most basic of tenets "judge not less you be judged." In other words if you judge others unfairly so will you be judged unfairly. many suffer from inferiority complex and has to designate others more inferior in order to feel superior and accepted.
Just live and let live and leave the judging to the Divine.
That is a great holiday card, any holiday, any time, any place. That is what good caring people should be hoping for. Personal religious beliefs should not be used to batter others.

ReplyDeleteI love the sentiments on this card! There will never be peace until love and tolerance is practiced at the individual level. My beliefs have taken a lifetime to come together, and I would never dream of asking or demanding that anyone else agree with them!
