My brother, Dennis is my techie in Hawaii, but my Master Techie who sets up my computers and can fix them even when he's about 4,189 miles away (I googled it.) is my son-in-law, Ed.
Once I learned that Ed, Tif and KC were coming to Hawaii, I asked Ed if he would help me get a new computer. He looked at my old computer which is not super old, but old enough that it was getting sluggish and said it would probably be a good time to get an upgrade.
He ordered the parts from Amazon, stuck in extra memory from my old computer and made sure I knew how to get started with the new Windows 8.1.
Ed said he personally does not like the Windows 8.1 operating system. My brother doesn't like it either. My son, Keola and his Sarah also don't like it.
I was feeling pretty nervous.
Tiffany on the other hand said, "This is good for you, Mom. I've read that it's good for a senior's brain to figure out things on the computer."
I started up my new computer and this popped up.
Arrrghhh!!!
What the heck?
It looked completely different from my old desktop. I'm told it was designed this way to make it more attractive for touch pads.
Luckily my family was here to show me the teeny tiny arrow at the bottom that I could click on to get the old desktop back. Phew!
Throughout the next few weeks, there would be a few other little glitches that I could count on Ed to adjust and fix for me. I do love my son-in-law.
Do you see KC at his side watching every move he makes? Ed showed her what the inside of a computer looks like and how to screw in all the little parts that make it think.
I will soon have three techies in the family and I love them all.

I have W7 on my laptop, I think I'll hang on to it for a few more years
ReplyDeleteI wish I could borrow one of your techies today! My laptop space bar and 3 keys suddenly quit working when I turned it on!. Makes one wonder what is going on in there when the cover gets shut at night!

ReplyDeleteI have the touch screen and windows 8.1 and I'm finally getting the hang of it, Kay. I do think it's good for my brain to be challenged by all the new things I can do with my blog. I'm a little short on local techies, but I sure do love the Geek Squad at Best Buy....they have been a lifesaver!

ReplyDeleteI don't know anything about Windows, since I'm a Mac user. I would hate to have to learn all that new stuff, but you're right, it will be good for the old brain cells! :-)
ReplyDeleteAdd me to the list of those who don't like 8.1. However, after six months of hassle with it I've learned how to make it do most of what I want, and found a few good features.
ReplyDeleteI would eagerly sign up to learn rocket science before I would to learn a new computer. I am finally comfortable with my W7 after my XP went obsolete but it was a frustrating time. Keep those techies handy and good to know you have one in training. They will help you keep your sanity.

ReplyDeleteYou are very fortunate to have all that technical support. We do have our own techie, too, a friend of Jakes, when he is available. He takes over our computer remotely.

Hi Kay, It's great that you have SO much wonderful help with those techie things!!!! I don't think I have heard one person say that they like the new Windows Operating System... It's definitely very different. We are "Mac" people --so luckily, we don't have to put up with Windows! ha

it sure is nice to have people that know what they are doing! it's embarrassing but i couldn't do my blog without the help of my son.
ReplyDeleteYou are fortunate to have these techies. When my grandchildren were young I felt they would all keep me up with the cyber world but none of them have gone that direction. They all know more than I ever dreamed of knowing but are not techies to any degree. I just have to muddle through. Dread approaching Windows 8 and know I will have to soon.
