We like to eat boiled or steamed soybeans, known here as edamame. However we've only been able to find them in the frozen section of supermarkets that are grown in China.
I'm sorry to say this. We really loved our trip to China and the people we met there. However I would prefer to buy food that are more carefully monitored.
We happened to be at Costco and found this gigantic bag of edamame. The word Organic caught our eye. Non GMO also sounded good.
But then I saw that it was grown in the USA!
Wow! Amazing! Edamame grown in the USA!
We bought it right away.
One problem...
Would you believe the giant bag (filled with smaller sized bags) takes up a third of our freezer?
No, Art says I cannot buy a chest freezer just to store edamame.
That's OK. I cooked some, gave it to my brother and we're eating a bunch for snacks. So all's good! But you know what else I saw? A giant bag of organic blueberries!

Most of the things I get at Costco don't need to be refrigerated. I do have a deep freezer, so I don't think twice about buying Costco-sized bags. However, I could see where it would be a problem with just a standard refrigerator compartment.

ReplyDeleteSome of my friends grew edamame in their gardens this year. I'm thinking I might also, next year. I know what you mean about the size of those Costco bags. I might go look for that one myself. I love edamame. :-)
ReplyDeleteCostco products are amazing, a small freezer sounds a good idea, they are not very expensive these days. But maybe the electricity would be.
ReplyDeleteKay, I love Costco, but I hate the huge bags. We have a chest freezer, but the problem with those is that you get so much stuff in them and don't get things off the bottom. Some of those big bags have "zippers" in them, so you can use what you need at a time, so that's kind of nice. Have a great fall day!
ReplyDeleteWe have a side by side frig that has lots of freezer space but I'm not a fan of edamame and also we stopped our cosco membership cause we bought too much stuff!
ReplyDeleteWhile the FDA has its problems, they are essential for food safety. Makes me a little angry to see right-wing politicians call for the agency's abolishment. I would never trust anything grown in China or most of the third world.

ReplyDeleteSince they have smaller bags inside, share the bag with several neighbors. We don't have a Costco but I will look for it on the internet and see where else they sell them. I like them to snack on

ReplyDeleteWe get fresh edemame at the Hilo Saturday Market. I boil it with shoyu and star anise for flavor. It's a real treat.

I have a freezer cause they just don't make fridge freezers very large. It helps cut down on the shopping as there i time i buy meat, poultry, fish by the bulk, separate into bags and store.

In preGMO days, I remember picking through the soybeans in the supermarket fresh produce section. Many were bruised and of all shapes and sizes. It was bonanza to find perfect GMO like pods.

DeleteWe shop at CostCo. It is a great place to shop. I enjoy Edame and put them in salads or eat them just to snack on. I also buy organic at every opportunity.
ReplyDeleteNaomi and the kids taught me about edamame when they were here. It was fun sitting together and eating them from the pods. But your post opened my eyes. I went to my little freezer and read the label on the bag. Oi, imported from China! I had no idea!
ReplyDeleteHmmm, we just bought the exact same bag at Costco and ours say Product of China but packed in the USA. I'm absolutely no fan of buying any consumables from China but this was the only organic we could find that is affordable.
