A Day at the Museum

For Art's 70th summer birthday, he received a Honolulu Museum of Art gift card from a dear friend.  We had a free day so we decided to go.

We'd gone there a little over a year ago when Marianna (Hattie's Web) and Terry treated Cloudia (Comfort Spiral), Hank, and us to lunch but we didn't get a chance to see the exhibits.

The first Wednesdays of each month is a great time to go because there's free admission.

At other times, there's a required "donation."

The horse sculptures made of driftwood outside the museum are pretty awesome.

A docent greeted us saying that there was an "Ummmm...hmmmm.... old and more modern Japanese erotic art exhibit".

She told us we could skip it.

Ummmmm...

OK... after we left that exhibit.... which was....ummmm... interesting we decided to purify ourselves with some religious art.

This is a Northern Song Dynasty wood carving of Guanyin, c. 1025.  It's supposed to be a male bodhisattva with a Amitabha Buddha crown.

It really is an amazing religious piece and radiates serenity and peace.

I did ask a docent if it was OK to take photos.  He said I could so long as I didn't use a flash.  I didn't bring my camera, so I used my iPhone to take all these photos.

Art took this photo of me looking at some netsuke.

There was a small collection of African, South American and Polynesian art pieces.

This Hawaiian figurine display is obviously modern.

This Mayan terracotta piece was really exceptional.

There were also a Chinese and Mediterranean courtyard.

This one led to the Mediterranean.

We stopped in the gift shop and bought this calendar for mom to put in the kitchen.  Since her father was a zen priest, we thought it would be perfect.

And yes, she liked it.

It was a lovely way to spend the day.

  1. It looks like it was a fun time. I enjoy museums and will be spending quite a bit of time in them in Turkey next month. I am positive there won't be an exhibit of erotic art. :-)

  5. My youngest daughter went two years to UH there. She especially liked the oriental art history classes. We had a massive show of those horses here, and I loved them.

  8. What a great place to go. I could stay there a long time. I get frustrated when I go to museums as I don't get enough time to read everything.

  10. When I lived in Honolulu, this museum was a favorite. As you know from past comments,I love Asian art, particularly Japanese prints and Chinese and Korean pottery and ceramics. Great stuff. Oh yes, the calligraphy is great also. Another place I loved was the Temple on the windward side near Kaneohe.

  11. I was smitten by the horses. How nice that they did allow pictures. So many places do not.

    1. Awwww... Thank you. Art is grinning from ear to ear. To be honest, this is why I prefer photos of me taken from a distance... a long distance.

  15. I went back and read all your past posts and enjoyed your cruise. We also went to Turkey a couple of years ago, but I still have not had a post on it. You are good about talking about your trips quickly, and I wish I was so diligent, but time goes by and I talk about other things, but I still have all the photographs. The museum in this post looks so interesting and perfect for a birthday. My husband’s birthday is February 2nd and I don’t know where we’ll go. He hurt his back somehow so I don’t think we’ll do much walking.

  16. Art and I must be almost twins, but 70 during this last summer. We visited quite a few museums on our trip this fall. it is especially interesting to see artifacts when you have also visited the sites they came from.

  19. It surprises me that they would let you take photos. I wonder why you could not use the flash?

    1. The flash will cause paint and hues to fade. A lot of places will allow photography so long as you do not use flash. Sometimes they won't allow photography because they want you to buy the pictures in the gift shop.

  20. I think most museums have been relaxed on photography since most people use their phones which usually have no flash. I have an iPod Touch which is like an iPhone 5 without the phone part. It has a flash, but I don't think I could turn it on unless it was really dark.

    1. The iPhones do have a flash that you can torn on, but I was careful to not do that.
