When KC was very little, even littler than she is now, she loved her "Nenne doggie and kitty." Nenne means to sleep in Japanese. KC always slept with her nenne doggie and brought him with her when they visited us in Hawaii. (I just checked online and it said that "nenne" is an infantile version meaning to sleep.)
I think she was about two years old when she spotted a little stuffed animal cat and fell in love with it.
She begged grandpa to buy it for her which he did, of course. Was there a question?

Tiffany mentioned that those stuffed animals were getting pretty ratty so I thought I'd check out how much it would cost to perhaps replace them. They only cost about $6 or $7 dollars six years ago.

Our only child loved this quilt I bought 3 at K-mart as I knew I would wash them all the time,sure enough they did not last that long and I made her a pink one she adored and it still have it..Things are ridiculously expensive these days, I scour garage sales of the uber rich where I live for items never used or only at grama and grandpas home of course they live many miles from their grandchildren and it is in pristine shape, I go the last day on my bicycle and ask if they would take less lots of times if they are closing up for the entire sale they have given me them, wow whee, new things for kiddos who don't get much and I pick up blankys for my kitteh cats that are brand new for little money..I will not pay regular retail for anything let alone toys for little kiddos but they must be in pristine shape and new in my opinion many are still in the pkg they were purchased can you imagine, I make lots of kiddos quilts it is easy and I know it is clean and well received..I think many things today are exorbitant and kiddos who truly would like to have them cannot because most people here give to food pantries (food) and school supplies and toys only at the holidays and forget that little ones could really appreciate a tiny stuffed toy new because it could calm them in different stressful situations, the police ask for new stuffed toys they give them to the little ones when there is an emergency, god's blessings to them for doing that, aloha sweet Kay and Art & your Mom too, this is Mary from Vancouver it is still hot as a pepper plant breaking every heat record, but we my hubs and I are thankful for the a/c units were got and installed or we would be sunk with extremely high heat, we go to the shore when we can back to school and pantry things are filling my time. ReplyDeleteHi Mary! I had a very favorite rummage sale we always went to also in Illinois. It was also in a well to do area and we got so many wonderful bargains. I dressed my kids through grade school with clothes from that rummage sale. Both my kids were attached to flannel blankets I made for them. Ahhh... the memories...
DeleteWhoa! And they are not as cute as the originals either, in my opinion. My granddaughter had a bunny. Tots with their lovies are so cute.
ReplyDeleteSometimes the replacement just isn't the same anyway. I loved my ratty dolls when I was little and nobody could take them away from me! But that's an awfully big jump in price, that's for sure! :-)

I would have much more money but for the stuffed toys presented to grandchildren over the years. Someone's gotta do it, however.

DeleteAloha Kay, interesting posting. I guess young kids most will have Teddy bears or cute doggies to go to sleep with, and taking it away from them even after being 'tatty' or insides coming out is a sure case of tears and whatever, ha ha.

That's been my dream always...and very often I'll go into Youtube check out 'drives around Honolulu, Oahu, or that fabulous International market, and love that 'Surf Rider hotel' as well The Royal Hawaiian'...
If ever Lady luck smiles on me with my lottery tickets, it'll be 'Hawaii, here we come"! And getting a small house by the beach, I love fishing and watching sunsets. And love Hawaiian songs, especially by the late Don Ho....his "I'll remember you".

Thank you, Lee. It's wonderful to meet you. Yes, we're now living in Hawaii again after living in Illinois for 35+ years. The International Marketplace is gone. Sigh... It's been bulldozed for a more upscale, modern shopping plaza. I think it's fabulous that you live in Canada. We love visiting Canda!

I think those stuffed animals became a collector's item. Suffice to say we're not buying them.

ReplyDeleteMage reminded me of my daughter, now 50. We traveled together on occasion, and she always brought her own pillow. I teased her constantly about how ratty it was. "It's my childhood pillow; I cannot sleep without it!" This from a late twenties daughter. Then she met her future husband. Shortly thereafter I saw brand new pillows on her bed. Expect KC to take her nenne's to bed until they are reduced to an ear and a tail, which she may thereafter carry in her pocket. I love children.

ReplyDeleteYikes! That is quite a jump and I wonder what makes them so expensive. I think KC is probably still perfectly happy with her old ones anyway. My daughter took her lovies on to college and marriage and I know she wouldn't trade them for new ones.

Yes, ねんね (nenne) is Japanese 'baby-talk' for "sleep".
I don't min paying for quality goods. It's shameful the way places like CheapMart pays people non-living wages to make these things, and they wear out after too short a period of time. I try to buy local, especially from craftspeople.
