Every time we go on a trip, I keep my eyes open for a mug. It all started when students began giving me mugs for gifts. It's usually my only souvenir while Art keeps his eyes open for a t-shirt. He has a LOT of t-shirts, but he insists he wears ALL of them.
As for my mug collection...
Maybe not.
I have them all displayed in our cabinet, but as it happens, we use these same three mugs all the time. Mom uses her Butchart Gardens mug because it reminds her of the happy trip we took in springs of 2009 and last year. Every time she uses her mug, she thinks of the gorgeous blooms of the Northwest and Vancouver.
Ironically, my favorite mug was actually given to her by my brother and sister-in-law when they took a trip to the East coast. The mug is too big for her, but perfect for me and I love clear glass. I have a small collection of clear glass mugs as well.
Art, on the other hand likes this black mug because it's the right size for him and hides coffee or tea stains. I think he also likes the simplicity and the fact that it's inexpensive so if he breaks it, it won't bother him.
Do you have a favorite mug or do you alternate what you use? Do you have a favorite collection also?

ReplyDeleteI once collected a few T-shirts, but then I got into the mode of only wearing plain Ts, so that was that.
I have a few mugs but have used the same one since 2002! It was from a February 2002 workshop in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I just looked at it as I put my morning tea in it and realized that was a long time ago. :-)
ReplyDeleteMugs...to many big, fat, round mugs that hold more than 2 cups of coffee. I drink decaf now...with fake sugar, so quantity doesn't bother me. Perhaps books are what I collect now. Thousands of them. I'm trying hard to weed out the collection now. White House history fascinates me, so I have a continually growing collection of history about the building and its inhabitants. Reading "Ruffles and Flourishes" now.
ReplyDeleteI have too many mugs, I think....Recently I bought a few from Society6, a group which sells things with the designs of artists (current active artists) and they get some of the money, though honestly, I don't know how much. I have some clear glass mugs and bought from Dick Blick, an art supply company in OHio, some oil based markers that can be used to "paint" on glass....I want to test how these work and hope to do some crafts with my grandchildren with them if the technique is successful. I must say, books are my main collection.
ReplyDeleteI collect mulled wine mugs from different Christmas markets all over Germany and of course incense smokers and nutcrackers from the "Erzgebirge".
ReplyDeleteIn my downsizing I finally let go of the Christmas mugs though daughters said wait, they want some of those. I have a couple that were gifts from students that I like to use. I have a set of white ones that I like to use when I'm pouring brewed tea from a pot. My husband favors the big ones with big handles for his big hands.
ReplyDeleteHubby collects mugs on rare times, but I find that annoying trying to keep space for such dustables. He also has a hat collection.

ReplyDeleteI also only use the same mugs for my coffee - clear glass ones and also one that is wider at the top than the base.
ReplyDeleteSince I drink tea (with kalamunggay leaves) now, I am using my Japanese tea cups that are all blue and white. Makes me feel the culture, if you know what I mean.
I have too many collections and am going through and discarding a lot nowadays - I blame it on Marie Kondo and her book, "The life changing magic of tidying". Maybe blame is the wrong word, because it is a wonderful wonderful theory that really is changing my life.
I collect pitchers, mostly small ones. I especially love the individual creamers that used to be used in restaurants years ago...Most of my mugs are identical.

ReplyDeleteMy husband still uses a giant mug that our son gave him years ago, it is a Nightmare Before Christmas Mug, but he uses it year round! I like to use mugs that have scenes of a New England Christmas snowy scene...maybe they are also for Christmas but I use them year round!
ReplyDeleteI also collected mugs for awhile, had to donate some and still have a lot. I tend to use the same mug for a long time and from time to time I may switch to a new one that I find interesting. I tend to like large mugs, maybe a pretty colour or functional in some way. My current one is ceramic and insulated with a fitted cover.

ReplyDeleteWhen we travel we collect Christmas ornaments, and I might buy locally made jewelry or a craft item from a local artist.
ReplyDeleteWe are definitely collectors, but we are trying to restrain ourselves these days.
I like to buy mugs from places we have visited and was looking at them the other day thinking I really need to clear some out. But I have my favorites. One has a bear on the side with a grumpy face and underneath it actually says "Grumpy". I joke with Gregg telling him to watch out when I am drinking out of it.
ReplyDeleteWe went to La Conner for some daffodils and tulips, sweet harbor, the place you dined with Djanity Nell Thorn was packed we did get to see it inside but the tourists were really rude and crude, we dined with a waterfront view fish and crab and shrimp the lady who owns the newspaper business told us of her sisters place, it is take-out and take away, we got our feast for only I may add $10.00 each this included tea hot for me and a beverage of my hubs liking and all the fish one could imagine and crab oh, my goodness sakes, very touristy but lovely on the new dock they spent 9 million to build saw many yachts pass by then we drove to Anacortes wow whee what a lovely place, took a ferry ride and it is spectacular, I feel the Mt. Vernon tulip festival is only for tourists from BC and Seattle in huge buses and it costs a lot and tons of people we got to La Conner at 8 am and it was absolutely stunning it reached 76 by noon our lunch/dinner time..Anacortes was 78 and absolutely amazing and visited many places for free and got our ferry ride for free to come back to Vancouver, we will no longer go to Mt. Vernon whatsoever it is tooooo jammed with rude people on tours from BC & Seattle and expensive, I found a real mug made at a potters place in Anacortes that was only $4.00 and the fellow made me a lid so my tea would not spill he was wonderful, many artisans there and organic like you would not believe..it is a ways up from La Conner but nicer and huge, thought you might like to know as you wax poetic at the mt. Vernon tulip places..we have gone 2 times thru mt. Vernon and will never return, we live here and visit all over the state, we like to see and get some value for our many miles on our Hyundai and in our friends Prius when we travel..Aloha in paradise..mary and hubs from Vancouver!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DeleteI broke my favorite when moving and never replaced it. It was the Nescafe world glass mug. I see they are still on Ebay so I just may have to get another.
ReplyDeleteI've had a love affair with mugs for a long time but don't collect them anymore. I too used to collect them on travels. Over the years they started breaking one by one. I decided I'd forego the collection and buy a set of same mugs but different colours. Now individual pieces have started to chip and crack so I'll have to get rid of them or wait til there are no more, lol and get another similar set. I see a mug Butchart Gardens in your collection. It's a beautiful place, especially in bloom.
