I can't believe it!
I'm sick again! What the heck is wrong with me?
Since last November when I came home with a cold, I've had an aggravating annoying post nasal drip that has me clearing my throat every so many seconds.
My nurse practitioner, Kathy put me on Claritin which didn't do anything, Allegra which also was a bust and now on Zyrtec with Flonase. She sent me to a pharmacologist who reviewed all my medications and supplements and said everything I was doing was fine. She also said Claritin, Allegra, Zyrtec and Flonase are all standard procedure for my symptoms. Sigh... Next step is the ENT.
OK....
Last week Art suddenly came down with what he said was a horrible allergy. He was sneezing constantly, had watery eyes and a runny nose. He tried Benedryl and Sudafed which didn't do anything.
He finally started doing nose rinses which kind of grosses me out. (My brother swears by them too.) He would hold one nostril shut and suck up some salt water (through the other nostril) from a cup to clear out his sinuses. He felt it really did the job and was better in a couple more days or so.
Well... It WASN'T an allergy he had. It was a cold! And now I have it! Ever since I retired from teaching I've rarely been sick. Now I've gotten sick three times in the last six months.
Art insisted that I needed to do the nose rinse. It just so happened that we bought a nose rinse kit a couple of years ago that we never used. I bought it with Art in mind but he never used it.
Art prepared everything and led me to the sink telling me what to do. It wasn't hard and not all that uncomfortable either. I was rather surprised and my nasal passages felt nice and clean.... for about 20 minutes.
Heeeeyyyy... since I've had this cold, I don't think I'm clearing my throat as often.
Could it be?

Sorry to hear about your cold. I haven't been able to bring myself to using the product you picture here or some other similar type rinse systems though they've been recommended, but glad to hear your experience. This time of year often does set my head off and must guard against infection setting in.
ReplyDeleteI have a neti pot which I use when I'm stuffy from a cold. It also helps somewhat with allergies, but I find Flonase helps the most with my seasonal allergies. I don't take it year round. I sure wish you were close enough to visit my Naturopath, because he got my immune system up with vitamins. Between them and my vitamins for my eyes, I must have (as some has speculated) some of the most expensive urine in Bellingham! :-)
ReplyDeleteI pull out my neti pot at the first sign of a cold. Sometimes that's enough to flush the germs out and I don't get sick. Other times the cold seems to last a shorter amount of time.
ReplyDeleteAw poor Kay, good luck.
ReplyDeleteI heard that using those antihistamines you named for too long can do more harm than good.
Steamy hot chicken soup is the best bet; no joke. It doubles as inhalation therapy. :)
being sick is always a surprise...last night I had a tummy ache while sleeping then found myself at the bathroom sink losing some of my supper. After sleeping in the recliner for a few hours, I feel better but not my old normal healthy self. There are too many germs going around and people sneezing and coughing around us to avoid all the germs...sadly!
ReplyDeleteI upped my vitamin D and feel better overall. Unfortunately, I too am still coughing from my last cold. I'm so sorry about yours.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear you are sick. It's a never ending cycle once you have one cold because your immunities drop and your ability to fight the next one is limited. I am surprised that I haven't had a cold in a very long time. Someone I was speaking with recently remarked that Vit D is great for building your immune system and I have been on a mega dose of Vit D for several years, now recently reduced to 2000 units a day. That may explain it the good health. Now the Big Move makes me have a pain in the gut but that's the emotions taking over. Dan has that too.
ReplyDeleteI was lucky I never got sick except once when I worked at a job with no paid sick-time. Now I got it, and now I get sick at least once a year.
ReplyDeleteBeing sent to the pharmacologist - great idea. Hope to see those available in all clinics in the future. Advances in medicine just keep coming.
ReplyDeleteKay maybe it's time for a thorough physical including xrays etc
ReplyDeleteKeep your eye on your symptoms if they take long to leave or sneak back in a few weeks later. It could be something in the environment, something lacking in your diet, or a very low grade infection. It also could be just a cold.
ReplyDeleteAwwwww . . . get well soon, Kay.
ReplyDeleteGoodness, you really have been slammed this year. You not only get colds on your own, Art is nice enough to bring you one without your even having to go out. It sure does sound like allergies however. I was never allergic to anything till I hit 65 and moved here. Now I enjoy seasonal allergies. My doc says they can hit anytime.
ReplyDeleteNasal drip is a nuisance. I've had it for years. I haven't found anything that works. It seems to vary. One thing I think that works is switching to almond milk.
ReplyDeleterecover fast and I sick the second time twice this year
ReplyDeletei have that same nasal rinse system and I think it is quite effective. I hope the nagging symptoms clear soon.
ReplyDeleteI have always been amazed at how few colds and other icky stuff I come down with since I have retired from teaching. Although, I must say that the last five years or so i was seldom sick and that must be that I had built an immunity to everything.
I swear by that little gem on your counter. I'll even get up in the middle of the night to use it if I think a germ or an allergy has invaded. I have not had a cold for years.
ReplyDeleteBoost your immune system. It will take awhile but then you are good. Avoid antibiotics if you can since they do more long term harm than good.
ReplyDeleteAt the first sign of anyone getting sick or being near sick people, everyone in our family had to take Congaplex. Also, they have to contain their germs by not touching what others touch and wiping down with Air Detox (eucalyptus/mint/spray).
Keep your neck and feet warm for now, use Vick's Vapor rub on your chest when you sleep. Avoid sugars.
Hope you are 100% better soon.
Excuse me. I had to Aww chooo! before I typed my comment. Here in Seattle it IS allergies. The tree pollen season is upon us and I have developed allergies in my old age to the very trees that surround us.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry that you can't seem to get well. Maybe the ENT will know more.
Hi Kay, I just saw this and thought Art might appreciate seeing this photo. Aloha. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=935283493236625&set=gm.1017137798354139&type=3&theater

ReplyDeleteThese are absolutely great! Thank you so much. I'll show them to Art and he'll probably share them with his classmates.
DeleteI hope you're doing better. I had a cold during Christmas time and took about 2 weeks to get over it.
ReplyDeleteThat's tough, at our age, having a cold! We're babysitting, and Izzy was sick on Sunday. We'll see what the week brings! I usually just use a saline nasal spray. I think it does the same thing!
