We were very excited to attend a graduation ceremony a couple weeks ago at Kapolei High School. I think the last graduation we attended was for our own children almost 20 years ago in Illinois. The last high school graduation I attended in Hawaii was.... Good gosh! My brother's!
The Kapolei High School Commencement ceremony was held at their stadium.
Ummm....
It was HUGE! The general seating was on the other side of the stadium. I was glad I brought my bigger camera with the nice zoom.
I wish we'd also brought our binoculars.
A graduation in Hawaii is different from the mainland.
There was a concession stand where you could buy food. The people in front of me were busy stringing fresh flower leis for their graduate.
It was HOT! I was so glad I brought my solar umbrella. Art and I were comfortable under it.
I was amazed that there was a biplane flyover.
As far away as we were from the graduates my Canon SX50HS zoom allowed me to find my cousin's son on the upper most row of the bleachers.
The Marine honor guard marched in with the flags of the US, Hawaii and Marine Corps.
The ceremony itself was about an hour and a half. The sun went down so it became cooler.
Well wishers then swarmed onto the field carrying tons of leis and huge signs for the different graduates. Some were even lighted!
I was absolutely amazed. I'd never been to a graduation like this one.
I'm going to be attending a wedding next week. That should be fun too!

ReplyDeleteWith 4 kids, I remember those days of graduation. It really is an ending of their childhood, imo, so it is special, though they may not realize it at the time.
ReplyDeleteHawaii graduations are nuts. SO many people, so many leis, so many parties, so many schools. Since our last one graduated 8 years ago, we have been having zero requirements to attend graduation ceremonies and parties for the last few years. Rather nice to have the break.
I'm happy to see graduations end for a while, at least around here. My son's boys will graduate in 2018 and 2023. But I may not be around by then.

ReplyDeleteThat would be very different but nice. I'm always amazed at the huge stadiums American high schools have. Flying into Chicago , you look down and see lots of large high school stadiums.

ReplyDeleteGood for you, and good of you to attend this large graduation. We had quite a run of graduations for a while, and except for my brother's youngest daughter, that generation is now through with high school. The next generation is now beginning to graduate, but I have decided I will only attend my own grandchildren's from now on. Enough is enough.

ReplyDeleteMy own high school graduation was a small event held at the school, so seeing this one was quite unique, Kay. And, it seems we both use the same camera model for zooming in. It's quite a nice one, I agree.
ReplyDeleteThat is a very large stadium. I need to search Amazon for a solar umbrella - I can't take the sun anymore and find that sunscreen only does so much in terms of protection.
