We saw a review in the Star Advertiser by Katie Walsh (Tribune News Service) about Love and Friendship. She gave the movie 4 Stars and wrote "Love and Friendship is immensely charming and laugh-out-loud funny. It's possible to miss some of the funnier lines because the audience might be laughing too hard at the previous one."
We go to maybe 1-2 movies a year and I figured it was time after seeing this review. I think I've seen four remakes of Pride and Prejudice. Art knows I like Jane Austen so he offered to take me to Kahala Theater.
I thought the theater would be empty because I didn't see this movie as one that would draw big crowds. No blood or guts. No gunfights. No passionate love scenes. It's Jane Austen, for goodness sakes!
Wrong. The theater was PACKED!
But laugh-out-loud funny. Hmmmm... Well... I think there were maybe three or four people that laughed out loud. The rest of us were pretty subdued except when British comic actor Tom Bennett was on the screen playing a clueless suitor.
The movie is based on one of Austen's early novels, Lady Susan. Lady Susan is a witty, manipulative, scheming, very beautiful widow (played by Kate Beckinsale) who is trying to get rich husbands for herself and her daughter while maintaining a romantic relationship with a married man.
There's a lot of dialogue that you have to pay close attention to. My problem was not liking the protagonist. I didn't care very much what happened to her even though I understand that it was a time period when a woman's survival in that class system depended on having a rich husband.
Ah well... I hope some of you will go and see it and tell me what you think.
Our son texted me, "Did you force Dad to see that film?"
Of course not. But the next movie we see will undoubtedly be science fiction or action.

I might like the movie. I am less into action and SF than many other guys. As for laughter, there was some in the last movie I saw, Mother's Day, but I didn't think it was very good overall. Different strokes for different folks.

ReplyDeleteIt's very hard to find a good movie these days. Even on netflix-the other night we tried watching a movie marked PG but it had language and nudity!!!

ReplyDeleteDavid is the movie buff in the family. He watches a Netflix movie every day and goes to the theater once a week. I don't really care for movies that much. The last one I enjoyed was Woody Allen's To Rome with Love.

ReplyDeleteI saw it last week at our independent theater. I enjoyed it, but I too didn't care for the protagonist. I wanted her to have some come-uppance, which she didn't. But Tom Bennett was brilliant! I liked it but I didn't love it. :-)

Right now I am watching the Murdoch Mysteries, a Canadian cops and robbers show set in Victorian times on Netflix. I am enjoying it very much.
ReplyDeleteHmmm. Sounds like your expectations were not met, which is always a disappointment. I hardly go to theatres, except on Christmas Day with the family because of no crowds (except the last few years have been crowded!)
ReplyDeleteArt is a trooper - he sees "chick flicks" with you! The last movie my chick friends and I went to see was "Departures" - one of the most moving pictures with lasting beauty.
I actually love the Die Hard movies with Bruce Willis. Impossible odds and Bruce is always able to walk away with his snarky grin.
We took my mom, aunt and uncle to see Departures at Kahala and at the end we were all crying at the emotional beauty of it. It deserved the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It's one of my all time favorite movies!
