Hurricane Madeline has swung away from Oahu. It did bring strong winds and flooding to the Big Island, but we were lucky on Oahu this time although the howling winds had me feeling anxious on Wednesday night.
I've been getting pretty blase lately about all the hurricanes because we've had so many near misses.
However, right behind Madeline is Lester. Festivals are being cancelled on this island and precautions are being taken on the other islands. People are going to be sent home early.
I saw a lot of people stocking up on water again at Costco.
I've heard of some people buying cases of water and then returning it when the storm has passed. This really creates a big problem for the stores since it skews their inventory.
Everything looks calm right this minute, but for how long?
Hurricane Lester has intensified to a category 3 storm and is supposed to hit this weekend.
The usually calm Art is nervous. And if he's nervous, I'm starting to freak out.
POSTSCRIPT (11:30 AM September 2, 2016):
Just checked the weather report. The hurricane watch has been called off. Hurricane Lester is now veering north-northwest of us. Phew! Dogged another bullet, but it sure is humid.
Come visit me. I have two extra bedrooms. Oklahoma is safe from hurricanes however we are quickly becoming the earthquake capitol of the world. Hope you will be safe.

ReplyDeleteWind can be very powerful destructive force at times. Now if you live where I live you have no worries about wind, but you would worry about extreme frost.

ReplyDeleteI have friends who work at Sam's Club and after all these natural threats, folks return the water. But Sam's has to destroy them becuz they may have been fooled with. What a waste, they don't return it to the shelves. It's just their policy. More reason why I dislike these disaster hoarders, they wipe out the shelves depriving someone of it, then they return it. Baboozes. BB
ReplyDeleteNo kidding? That's a horrible waste of resources! I've seen signs in some stores that say they won't refund hurricane supplies. I agree about the hurricane hoarders.
DeleteI'm glad to hear you seem to be dodging these storms as well. I just read the blog of Henny Penny in North Carolina, and she was complaining that their hurricane/tropical storm never brought the much needed rain they needed. When it rains, it pours, when you need it, it doesn't. ;-/

ReplyDeleteIt sure IS humid, and rather still right now, isn't it, Kay? So glad that we are safe - again. It is almost as if Hawaii has a protective shield on it, most of the time.

I have one extra case of water, which we will use. Those hoarders can hoard if they feel the need, but the stores shouldn't bear the burden of their greed. When Hurricane Iniki hit Kauai, some scumbag people were selling their water, drinks for exorbitant prices to those that didn't have. It was like a war zone, each man for himself. My Kauai girlfriend said that if it had hit Honolulu, people would have killed to get what they wanted. Sad, and SO glad we were spared that time, this time, and all other times.
I have a friend on Kauai who mentioned how bad it was too when Iniki hit. That was too scary and too awful! Oahu was lucky, sort of. Hurricane insurance is so so expensive here!

A woman at the pool where I swim said that Mauna Kea sheared the top right off that sucker. There is a video of this happening, taken from the Mauna Loa Observatory, but I can't find it.
