Art and I were having lunch and started talking (again) about how different we were. As we laughed, the list grew and grew. It would almost make you wonder what brought us together.
So here's our list and it keeps growing:
* He hates to write. I enjoy it and do most of our correspondence.
* He likes math and was an engineer. I don't.
* He's very near sighted and can read all the fine print for me. I'm very far sighted.
* He has Asian flush and shouldn't drink alcohol. My family doesn't have that problem.
* He remembers things. Sigh... I don't.
* He has a refined sense of taste and smell. Sadly, it seems I've lost most of it. Mom doesn't even ask me to taste anything she's cooking anymore.
* He likes the windows closed at night. I like it open.
* He likes it warm. I like it cool.
* He likes a dimly lit bathroom. I like my daylight bulbs on full. He installed a dimmer in our bathroom so he can lower the lights when he uses it.
* He can drive anywhere. I don't.
* He doesn't gain weight. Sigh.... sigh... sigh... I do.
* He likes to exercise all the time. I don't. I should. But I have to be pushed into it.
* He doesn't much care for sweets or chocolates. I love them. I shouldn't, but I do.
* He loves planning for trips. I don't.
* He's rather disorganized. I love things to be organized!
* He can fall asleep in a minute or sooner. It takes me a while.
* He's a morning person. I think best in the evening.
* He can follow printed instructions and fix things. I don't fix anything.
* He looks at details. I look at the whole picture.
* He snores. I don't. He says he's caught me snoring, but don't believe him.
* He reads the paper very carefully and knows a lot of the ins and outs of politics. I just know we're doomed if Trump becomes president.
* He's a concept cook. I need a detailed recipe. (First you get the pot, then the spoon, 1/16 tsp salt, 1/20 tsp pepper, etc.)
* He enjoys sports. I only watch the Olympics and halftime Super Bowl shows.
* He likes vanilla, I'm all chocolate.
We've been married 43 years so I guess we've managed to complement each other rather than fall apart which is a good thing. I guess the main thing is you have to know how to laugh.
I think I'll open the windows once he falls asleep tonight.

You are like my hubby and me: we have more differences than similarities. If you made a list of all the ways you are similar, would it be as long? :-)
ReplyDeleteHmmmm.... We didn't make a list of those. However, right off the boat, I'd say it's a good idea that we both swing more toward being liberals.
DeleteSounds familiar. I think that its more that you complement each other to be a whole. We will celebrate 43 years in March.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about Trump.
I check out the 100 year old man and have been laughing as I read it. Just to the point where benny will explain why he didn't quite make it as a vet. What a cast of characters. Thanks for the recommendation. I have the other one you recommended waiting to be read next.
I'm having a hard time getting through My Grandmother Told Me to Tell You She's Sorry. It's very different from A Man Called Ove.
DeleteThat sounds like balance to me. Two opposites make a whole in this case. Perfectly. :)
ReplyDeleteWell, you are both very attractive people,so you do have something in common.
ReplyDeleteEngineers are good to have around. Teachers are good to have around.
ReplyDeleteYou both always look happy in your photos so you must be doing something right over those 40+ years.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the longer people live together the more differences they find.
ReplyDeleteYou definitely offset each other in a good way!
ReplyDeletefunny post, I guess the differences keep things interesting!
ReplyDeleteOpposites don't always attract. But, I think being compatible is most important in a long lasting, happy marriage.
ReplyDeleteYou are just perfect for each other. That you found each other and stayed together is proof of that.
ReplyDeleteI know a lot of couples like you who don't manage nearly as well. You are each other's seasoning which can make for a tasty marriage.
ReplyDeleteI don't get the dimly lit bathroom, you've mentioned it before. Is it only during the night when he wakes up and uses it, he wants it dim? I'm like that, I actually stumble into the bathroom and do not turn on the lights. Which accounts for me falling asleep on the potty sometimes. In the day I have a window so it's always bright. The upstairs bathroom has a skylight so it's lit up during the day. BB
ReplyDeleteYes, only at night. I'm now picturing you asleep on the potty even though I don't know what you look like. Too funny!!! Now I'm wondering if I know you. I know quite a few people in Mililani.
DeleteCongratulations on dealing with differences and making things work. Your first sentence had me thinking, "Oh they stopped talking to each other!"
ReplyDeleteI guess the difference keep things interesting. It also gives us a chance to practice patience! Jim and I are also very opposite. I can relate to your list quite well.
ReplyDeleteOpposites definitely attract. Always.
ReplyDeleteCompromise is a beautiful thing.
ReplyDeleteMy list of differences might not be quite as long - we are both teachers - but much of it would resemble yours. We have completely different ways of solving problems, but we usually end up in the same place.
ReplyDeleteYou forgot to list that Art is a good sport about being a blogger's husband. :)
ReplyDeleteActually, he supports it 100%
DeleteYou have answered your own question. Yes they do:-)
ReplyDeleteIt was cold the other night, so I closed the window to a fairly small crack ... which wasn't all that small. My wife wasn't amused. She's one hot chick ... so to speak. Great list, Kay.
ReplyDeleteMy husband, Bob, and I were opposites in many ways but we were married 57 years before he died in 2010. I hope you and your husband get even more years together.
ReplyDelete57 years! Wow! I'm so sorry for your loss, Margie. I hate to think about living without Art.
DeleteGreat post Kay! My hubby and I have many "opposite" qualities, but are similar where it is really important . Such as we agree on politics (both liberal leaning), we are both neat-nicks, and our introversion/extroversion balance is pretty similar.
ReplyDeleteNow, let's get another post where you chat about all the things you guys are great at, the things you share, or enjoy together, what makes you such an amazing couple. :)
ReplyDeleteIt is good to have differences, I think we all have them especially those in straight relationships. Guys and girls will always have a lot of things that separate them.
ReplyDeleteAs for me and Daisy I can think of a few
She likes Hallmark and Lifetime, I can't stand it
I like pets, she is rather terrible at "liking" them. She says it's because of fur.
She eats almost anything, I'm far more selective
She is terrible at trivia, I'm a genius at it (obviously)
She likes games of luck I like games of skill
She's bad with money, I'm far better with it.
She doesn't wear socks in the house, I do.
I read very fast, it takes her months to finish a novel.
She prefers to sit down in a restaurant, I prefer to take it home.
I'm with you on books. However, Art did finish The Martian in record time while it took me forever.
DeleteIt's called the ying and yang, compliments work together to make one!
ReplyDeleteI could have written this post. I often wonder what attracted us but after 54 years it seems a shame to quit now.
ReplyDeleteWe are opposites, too, but we rub along well enough ;-)
