I looked out my windows and finally saw the Koolau mountain range clearly. Until recently it's been covered with a gray vog. The meteorologists said the only nice thing about the vog is that it gives us colorful sunsets.
Well, last week it was so bad that even the sunsets weren't pretty. It was just gray. Friends with asthma or other lung ailments were really suffering. Smog usually left me feeling tired in Chicago. Here in Hawaii, vog does the same thing.

The word is a portmanteau of the words "volcanic", "smog", and "fog". I wonder how the people on the Big Island are faring since that's where the vog originates. I guess it's a matter of whether you're downwind or upwind.

ReplyDeleteI lived in LA in the VERY smoggy sixties. I've never heard of vog before, but I certainly understand.
ReplyDeleteIt's all about the wind direction, here on the big island. I've had asthma for many years and am able to manage the bad day, although last week was rough at times when I was outside picking citrus, planting, and weeding. I will happily put up with vog now and then after a lifetime in crazy, crowded California!
