On the Other Hand, a Good Buy!

Art spends a lot of time cleaning the kitchen stove because of the oil splatters from cooking.

One day, I discovered that the water kettle was covered in grease gunk.

It turned out that mom was using the water kettle to shield the stove top from the oil splatters.

I confess that when Art was doing the clean up, I didn't insist on a remedy for the situation.

However, when I had to spend an hour cleaning the water kettle I immediately decided something had to be done. (OK, maybe I'm exageratinag, but it was a long time.)

Art wondered if there was some kind of screen that we could use. Sure enough, I located something on Amazon.

The reviews were decent so we bought it. It was pretty cheap, but was sturdier than we expected.

It's been working great so far though I wish it were maybe two or three inches taller.

Still.... we're pleased, mom is pleased, and I don't think I'll have to clean grease off of the water kettle for a long time. Yay!

  1. I purchased one of those screens that you place over the pan and that works pretty good. Except hubby keeps forgetting to use it!

  2. That's a great idea, Kay. Glad you found a solution. Every once in awhile I notice that our water kettle needs cleaning, but it's not covered in grease, since we don't fry our foods very often. :-)

  3. I put my tea kettle in the dishwasher every so often. My condo came with a glass cooktop and stainless new appliances, neither of which I find very desirable since I seem to spend far too much time wiping everything down and polishing. You must have to wash that shield right away or it would become a job to scrub grease off. I would guess the advantage might be being more aware of grease getting on that as opposed to the kettle.

    1. The shield does have a teflon type coating but we do clean it everytime it's used.

    1. Barring anything else happening in our lives, we should be in Hawaii at that time. :-D

  5. i just put cutting boards or towels to catch the splatter. i've also taken to cleaning my cooktop very often! mine got really bad and i had to put the pieces outside in a bkack bag with ammonia to clean it.

  6. Why did it take so long for somebody to come up with this? Something similar has been on camp stoves for years.

  7. Great solution! I have a very flimsy one that I got from the Marukai dollar store years ago. It does a decent job and I can also toss it without feeling wasteful after it gets grubby.

I had to laugh when I saw your last picture and your reflection in the tea kettle. It reminded me of a picture of a tea kettle for sale on ebay, but the photographer's reflection was recorded - in his chubby and buck naked glory.

  9. That's cool. I haven't seen something like that in a long, long time.

  10. Looks dandy, but I'm confused: why not put a lid on the food you're frying? I'm afraid I'd be clumsy and knock the shield over. My son got a spatter screen with a handle, and I had to teach him that is sits on the rim of the pan, not directly on top of the food/bacon. I love the pre-cooked bacon, but it's SO expensive. 11. I have a splatter screen too, like Linda in kansas is talking about, but it doesn't work when you are stirfrying something and manipulating the food in the pan. This looks like a good solution.

  12. And yes, that’s exactly why we had to get the splatter guard. So far so good.

  13. I use a splatter screen the few times I fry anything but it doesn't do the complete job. Not having Art handy, I will check this out. Thanks.
