Our mattress has been showing depressions in it and my sleep quality has been going down. I have no idea if it's tied. It's only about 8 years old, and they say that you should change them between 7-10 years. Seems crazy since my mother has a mattress that must be 20+ years old and there are no depressions in it.
When we bought our previous mattress, it showed depressions within a month. American Mattress did replace it with a Serta Vera Wang. However, within about 5 years, it started to show depressions as well. I've gone to mattress stores and laid down on them and it's never been a guarantee that it would still be great in a week or a year.
I checked online and saw that you could order a much cheaper mattress although it would still run us about $900 at Tuft and Needle. It seemed to have good reviews.
HOWEVER... before I did that, I wanted to try a mattress topper. The Airbnb we'd stayed at had a topper and it felt great.
I decided to order one from Costco. It cost $160 for a King topper.
It arrived in less than a week.
The topper is 3 inches, and online websites warned that toppers would not remedy depressions in an old mattress. The toppers would just sink into the depressions.
Soooo.....
I had this idea.
I folded up a couple of beach towels and stuck them in the depressions.
Then we put the mattress topper on it.
Next, I put our original mattress protector (from American Mattress) on it and then on top of that I put on the cover that came with the topper.
The mattress topper cover has a supposedly cooling fiber thing in the middle. Foam is not great for people who sleep hot. That's Art. He was dubious that just that strip would keep him cool.
On our first night, we both slept a little over 8 hours (according to my Fitbit). The previous two nights were in the guest bedroom while we let the topper air out.
Whether this trend will continue... we'll see.
If the depressions show up again, we can always replace the mattress as a last resort.
We'll think of the options and sleep on it.

OK... the depression formed again under the mattress topper so we went to Ross and bought thicker beach towels to which I added some smaller old towels that we would have gotten rid of.
Then I noticed a ton of little flakes all over the place. Turned out the American Mattress protector had deteriorated and flaked all over. Sigh....
So back to Ross to buy a mattress pad. One Serta pad ($28) said it would fit a 15 inch mattress. It didn't come close. Our mattress is 10 inches and the mattress topper is 3 inches. So back to Ross to return it and on to TJ Maxx where instead of paying $28 we ended up paying $50. Sigh.
However, this Hotel Luxury Linens (West Pacific Home Fashions) pad fit beautifully and the depression is gone. I hope.
OK... Total cost.
$160 for topper, $26 for two beach blankets, $50 for mattress pad. So it's a total of $236.
I'm thinking it's worth it. For now. If the topper goes bad in 5 years, I can just replace it instead of paying $1,000 for a new mattress.

We use that very same topper and like it although we don't do all of the other stuff. The reason that we use the topper is to soften the mattress. For whatever reason, the mattress was a lot stiffer than the version that we tried in the store.
ReplyDeletewow, what we go through for a good nights sleep lol,,, we had the same problem and we also bought a topper, it prolonged the life our matteress, we bought a new mattress last year and it has depressions,, now we are looking again at a topper, I have come to the conclusion they just do not make things as good as they once did,, they must want us to replace things more frequently!!I hope your solutions help,
ReplyDeletewe solved our problem with a topper also and what a difference it made our pad had depressions so we took off the foam pad and just used the topper and it works for now. new mattresses are too expensive...
ReplyDeleteHope this works.
ReplyDeleteNeither of my guest rooms are comfortable for my brother and his wife. My brother even went out to search for a new mattress and box springs for one of the guest rooms and was going to buy it for me and have it delivered but it could not get here during their visit so they didn't get it. They survived that trip but now stay in a nearby hotel when they come here. I am happy with my bed and cannot afford new mattresses for the guest rooms so I feel bad, though others don't complain...as much. Maybe I can try a couple of these toppers.
ReplyDeleteI do use a topper and love it. I have a 10 year old mattress. I learned to sleep on a diagonal-- would be difficult but not impossible to do with a bed partner--and the depressions are now gone as is my morning stiff back. We do what works. Hope your solutions still works.
ReplyDeleteOh, what a struggle you two have had with this. Once long, long ago we spent a lot of money on a Beautyrest to replace a very old Beautyrest. It didn't last long. We bought another but at an estate sale. Much to our surprise, it's lasted and lasted for a long time with out the two of us rolling together in the middle. When we start rolling together again, I'll get a topper and new cover. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWe have a rather hard futon mattress that I bought ten years ago in Colorado. We use a memory foam topper on it to make it softer, and neither of us have any depressions in our mattress. I'll keep going with more firm and get something to make it more comfy. Hope your situation is fixed now! :-)
ReplyDeleteYou go places I've never dreamed of going. And I dream a lot. Never heard of a topper, to tell the truth. :-)
ReplyDeleteYou are so funny, Hank! Ummm... I've got a few more places up my sleeve that I'll write about later this year.
DeleteI had a mattress set that was over 30 years old and everyone who used it said it was the bestest. Finally I had to give it away as I was moving. I bought a new one that lasted 5/6 years before it sagged so badly. It had a pillow top which was a huge mistake cuz I couldn't flip it upside down.
ReplyDeleteI sleep super hot so no foams for me and I read all foams sag over time. You could try the one w/ the sleep # so that the hardness can be set separately for each sleeper. It seems the quality of beds have gotten worse over time though the prices remain high. -BB
Oh I definitely think they are purposely making it so you have to get a new one every 5 years (or less). And why oh why do they make those mattresses so fat? I have a friend who has to hop to get onto her bed. It's crazy! And why oh why can't they make it so we can flip them over?
DeleteInteresting. So far, we have no indentations in our mattress that we recently began sleeping on. It had been in the guest room, but since the Tempurpedic mattress we were sleeping on was giving me back pain and making me sleep too hot, I made an exchange a few months ago and moved the guest bed mattress up to our room. I sleep so much better!
ReplyDeleteI had planned on getting a foam topper, but still haven't because I kept reading reviews that said that the toppers often had a chemical odor and had to be aired out to let them "off gas". I have nowhere to put a topper to let it have time to "off gas". I'm not even sure I want something the size of a queen size mattress topper gassing off inside of my house. It aggravates me no end that mattresses are now made so they cannot be flipped. Everything seems to be getting dumber and dumber, non flipping mattresses and off gassing toppers. Who would have thought we would have stuff like this. A lot of nights I just get up and go sleep in the recliner.
ReplyDeleteWe just sink into our depressions and are perfectly comfy. When we bought our current mattress about five years ago, we bought a low profile box springs so that the thick mattress wouldn't be so high. I can't figure out why they make them so high. It makes no sense, except that the can charge more for more materials. I think the current mattress situation is a skam. We had our previous mattress for over 40 years.
ReplyDeleteYou are so creative with your solutions! Good one!
ReplyDeleteWe decided that after 20 years of marriage, we needed a bigger bed and so upgraded from a queen bed to a king. I ordered the softest mattress from the company we ordered our from, and it still felt way to hard for our liking and so that is the reason we ordered the mattress topper(s). Since the correctly sized one has been in place, we have both slept quite well and don't have aching hips and shoulders like we had before.
ReplyDeleteI also wrote another post where I explained how every time we change the sheets, we move the pillow to another side of the bed so we're always moving clockwise. I know some people might think it's crazy but we got the idea from Arkansas Patti who said she sleeps diagonally. This prevents dents in the mattress for us.
