Window Repair

When we did our home renovation in Hawaii, Art wanted to get CertainTeed windows because they'd worked so well in Illinois. Unfortunately, they haven't worked so well here in Hawaii.

In about five years there were leaks in the double pane glass. I wish I'd taken photos of how bad they got eventually. The gases between the pane apparently leaked and the glass got discolored and ugly.

When I tried to contact CertainTeed, I discovered they were bought out by Plygem or something like that.

It had a lifetime guarantee which is why Art liked them.

Whatever the case, it was wonderful to hear that Plygem would honor the guarantees.

They sent all these replacement glass panes.

A little while later, Alex and Leo came out and replaced all the leaking glass panes, but unfortunately noticed more windows that needed replacing. They said they'd order it and come back to install it.

On the downside, I don't know if I can recommend the CertainTeed windows. On the other hand, I'm really liking how responsible Plygem is in making sure their customers are satisfied. Keeping my fingers crossed that the Plygem replacement windows will be better than the original.

  1. Always something to fix. Sometimes, most times, I'm glad not to own a house. Good luck with the windows, Kay and Art.

  7. my house needs a lot of repair as well..sad to say there is no more warranty for an old house. Your windows should be very nice after the repair.

    1. We've never lived in a brand new house and I guess at this stage, we never will. Things will happen with an old house.

  9. That is great that they are honoring the warranty but bummers that it deteriorated. I use Milguard windows. I tried Coastal since they were local and fast but somehow the quality is not the same.

  10. I have my fingers crossed that our windows don't leak or deteriorate. The patio slider is getting cloudy in spots and a service call was never followed up on. Our Whidbey cabin window supplier went out of business and in ten years most of the windows are failing. we have had to pay to have them replaced, a few at a time.

  12. Wow! Around 1984, I was married to my son's Dad, who was a professional window and siding installer in K.C. CertainTeed windows were the only ones he liked and would install. We put them in the house we lived in and were renovating. We liked them because if one needed repairing, the manufacturer was in K.C. They were SO good, during the K.C. winters, the window was much warmer than the wall! Glad to hear they still honor their guarantee even after changing owners. Keep your receipts. The new company surely knows Hawaii is a little tougher on exteriors over time. Linda in Kansas

    1. The CertainTeed window we installed in Illinois still works beautifully. Art really liked their windows. However, Plygem says there was something wrong with the way the window glass was constructed when we installed our windows. They know what the problem was now. Keeping fingers crossed.

  13. Plygem honored the guarantees - that's incredible. But unless they supply high quality materials they will always be running around replacing poor quality stuff. That will neither get them profits nor customer satisfaction.

    1. Apparently there was something wrong with the way the window was constructed around the time we had our windows installed. I'm told they've corrected that problem now. However, the installers in Hawaii warned me to expect a few more windows to deteriorate in the next several years. Sigh...

    2. I remember the discussion centering around the way the double (or triple) layers were sealed and the type of gas put inbetween the layers of glass. Back then, rarely the seal changed and the gas/air leaked out, causing the inner windows to fog. Glad you got nice replacements. Linda in Kansas

    3. Good gosh, Linda... so your extensive knowledge base encompasses windows as well. That is pretty much what the window repair company owner told us. He says they’ve figured out what the problem was so the new window glass should do better. Your are amazing!
