It's been 10 years since we've moved back to Hawaii and let mom tend to the garden. She considers it her domain.
However, some things have just taken over.
When we moved here, the garden was doing OK. It was a pretty rock garden.
While we were not paying attention, the iris plant went wild.
We could no longer see the rock.
I tried digging out the plant myself before Art took over. When did I get so weak?
Oh yes, much better.
And here's another overgrown bush.
I would dearly love to get rid of the popcorn orchid plants and pineapple, but certain members of our household just can't seem to let it go. Sigh...
Ah well, at least I can see the rock garden again. And in 10 years, I guess we'll have to work on it once more.
And oooowwww... my back is killing me!

ReplyDeleteEvery ten years and in a tropical environment...hard to believe. I live in zone 7 and have to do that type of work every other year!! You do have the eye that shows how much more Zen simplicity is.

ReplyDeleteI do very poorly with popcorn orchid plants and can see why certain members want to keep them - when they bloom they are spectacular! If anything, maybe having them on a bench-like shelf with stone legs so they are off the ground a few inches. I sometimes use old weathered 8x10s on hollow tile blocks but stone would look better.
Re-Use Hawaii (off of Ala Moana Boulevard) has wood and so much recycled stuff that I am addicted to going there. They even call me Aunty! Art would love it, and it is a good place to donate stuff you don't want anymore.
It's a different iris compared to what I have. They are hard to control but have beautiful blooms.

ReplyDeleteMy mom used to haul rocks and dig up weeds constantly. I remember that about her in the back yard more than anything else. She just kept going until she couldn't any more :-)
