We have watched both presidential debates and found them riveting. Believe it or not, I'm not truly knowledgeable about politics. My son majored in political science and my daughter-in-law worked as sort of a government watchdog. And of course, my husband reads the paper cover to cover to always keep abreast of everything. However, with the advent of the current president, I've been aghast, mortified and angered by what he has been doing.
Therefore, I was very interested to see which candidate I would really want to vote for. It's hard. I've always been an admirer of Elizabeth Warren. And then I was really impressed with Pete Buttigieg. They're both so smart and have great plans. But Cory Booker looked great too. Sigh... And so did Kamala Harris.
One question stood out for me. The moderator asked (I forgot the exact words), "What is the first priority on Day 1 when you become president?"
Would it be climate change, education, immigration, etc.?
I told Art mine would be gun control. Surprisingly, he agreed that it would be his top priority too. Since he worked for E.P.A. I thought he'd choose climate change, but he said that would be a long term goal that definitely needs to be addressed.
What would your top priority be? And do you have a favorite candidate yet?

I might be the only Vermonter who is not a Bernie supporter, but I really am hoping for Elizabeth Warren. I like Kamala Harris too. Definitely have a female bias because I think it is high time for a new perspective. That said, just some one who can win, please.

I rooted for Bernie in 2016, but his time has passed.

ReplyDeleteThough gun control is a major issue its not something that can change on day 1. The immigration problem is something that can happen day 1. I watched only the first hour of each night. I didn't like the format though I don't know how it could have been different. I like Mayor Pete and I have new admiration for Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris. Cory Book is also a possibility. Sanders and Biden are the wrong generation now.

ReplyDeleteWhile every candidate inspires me in some ways I tend to lean toward Warren, Harris and Buttigieg. The last election was nightmare since Progressives were given little choice. Getting money out of politics is a good first step because the big money is what is stopping work on all our major issues.

ReplyDeleteI don't follow politics so I appreciate your doing so. Top priority? Fix and improve the infrastructure of our transportation lines. I would like to see someone in the office that can clean up the budget.

ReplyDeleteI guess I have narrowed my choice of candidate down to ten from twenty. Bernie is certainly NOT one of them.

ReplyDeleteDay 1, Hmmmm, sign and reverse everything that Trumpty Dumpty reversed from the Obama years. Then, maybe we can really get some work done. I want healthcare, women's healthcare rights, and Medicare to be protected. Improving ACA with additions to would be helpful. Medicare for all sounds good, but I don't think folks want the increased taxes to cover it. I hope the two strongest candidates will swallow their egos and make an unbeatable ticket for the sake of the country. I wished Hillary and Bernie would have teamed up on the same ticket: they would have beat Trump and the Russians. Linda in Kansas

I watched only the second one, and I couldn't bear it longer than an hour. So much interrupting and talking over one another. People all seemed so rude, so pushy about having their say.And the audience was told not to make noise. I would rather there be no one there but the questioners and the candidates. And my choice is Andrew Yang, and he was asked only a couple questions directly, and because he didn't butt in on questions asked the other candidates, the viewers barely got to know him at all. I also heard that his microphone was off.
ReplyDeleteTop priority imho: bringing us together, solidifying the center, helping us to understand one another and empathize with people who live different lives than we do.
ReplyDeleteI am not into politics, don't have a political bone in my body. But, I am keeping my eyes and ears open to all the candidates to decide which one I would vote for. However, I WILL VOTE for whoever wins in the end.

Right now, I'm thinking a Harris/Buttigieg ticket would be great and the right balance to beat you know who. But it's early days yet so we'll see.
