I wrote a blog post a while ago about Pinwheel cookies. I used to love it some 30+ years ago. The kids would buy me a package every so often for special occasions. When I mentioned the cookies to friends in Hawaii, they said they hadn't heard of it. I tried to find it in Hawaii and couldn't locate it anywhere.
Then my daughter, Tiffany in Illinois said she'd come across it at the Jewel supermarket for $4.99. She brought a package with them to Hawaii.
I couldn't believe it! There it was! It was the real thing! It wasn't so much the taste of it anymore; it was the memories. Art suggested that we all just eat it up together.
You know what?
It was selfish of me that for a while I didn't want to open it. I didn't want to share it. I wanted to keep it intact and just look at it.
Then, shockingly, Tiffany found these cookies at Walmart! Good grief!
Can you believe it? And it's almost half the price!

We did a taste test. Almost everyone said they couldn't tell the difference. One person said they preferred the Pinwheel.
Since I've lost much of my sense of taste, I definitely couldn't tell the difference.
The rest of the cookies stayed in the refrigerator for the longest time. I didn't really want to eat it anymore.
I realized I couldn't hold on to the past in cookies. Or maybe I was sad I couldn't taste it anymore. Still, I was very happy to recall the memories of those wonderful days of our youth. And that was enough.

ReplyDeleteAnything that sells well gets knock-offs of the item. I'm sorry you couldn't taste it or tell the difference, but it's just as well to leave those kinds of treats in the past, if you ask me (which you didn't). :-)
ReplyDeleteNever heard of those cookies. But they wouldn't have been my choice. Only marshmallow I'll eat is an occasional s'more. Had those twice when we vacationed at Oneida Lake. But roasting the marshmallows is most of the fun.

I remember you posted about Pinwheels and I remember seeing in stores at some point but I don't believe I ever had one. I guess there comes a time when it becomes not worth trying to replicate memories. Better to keep the memories in our hearts and go about making new ones.
ReplyDeletewalmart is taking over the world. we've noticed how they are duplicating almost every commodity with their own brand great value then the other brands disappear. scary!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you were able to find such a fun thing from the past. You got me curious but we can only order them in this area. So sorry your diminished taste didn't let you take the memory trip to the fullest.

ReplyDeleteEven though they do not taste the same, for one reason or another, they hold the same memories.
ReplyDeleteDon't recall these particular cookies. But I've had the experience of finding an old snack item that I hadn't seen in years ... and usually they don't measure up. Yes, it could be that we don't taste as well. Or, it could be that those snacks were never as good in reality as they are in our imagination.

I don't think we have Pinwheels in the UK, but the next time I'm in Arizona I'm going to pop to Walmart and try some!
