Happy Halloween everybody!
I imagine we won't have any trick-or-treaters tonight. We've noticed that there were fewer and fewer children stopping by with their fun costumes here in our Hawaiian neighborhood.
I've also seen a change since those Halloween days of my children's youth.
Along with other parents in the past we often helped the kids make their own costumes.
Nowadays, costumes are store bought and a whole lot fancier.
I admit my attempts were pretty homemade looking, but it was fun anyway.
Since I had not yet gone back to teaching until a few years later, I guess I also had the gift of time to play with costumes.
Have you seen the elaborate costumes in stores these days? I wonder if my granddaughter will go trick or treating now that she's a middle schooler. I hope she can enjoy the fun of the holiday one more year. I know my little grandsons will be out there. Have a fun evening everybody!

Our son sent this photo of the jack-o-lanterns they carved with our two little grandsons. I wish we were there for the fun of it all.

Love the photos Kay, Happy Halloween! When I was a kid (back in the mid-1960s) my grandma made me a devil costume--bright red long underwear, with a long curved pointy tail sewn on the butt--it had a fishing line that connnected it to the small of my back so it bounced while I walked :)
ReplyDeleteMother opened a drawer and pulled out some old clothes....dramatic old clothes. A few years ago, our neighborhood was overrun with kids that were bussed in.

ReplyDeleteHappy Halloween Kay! It is too bad people are not making their own costumes, it can be fun. I must admit to getting some from the thrift store sometimes.

ReplyDeleteI remember store bought ones used to be a pretty cheap mask and a poncho with the characters' face on it. They have gotten better in years time.
ReplyDeleteI don't think costumes were sold in stores when my kids went out. We always put some kind of costume together.We used to have about 100 kids visit. I think tonight will be about 10.
ReplyDeleteI think it was middle school when I gave up trick or treating in favor of parties. Those jack-o-lanterns are terrific. Happy Halloween.

ReplyDeleteWe left a big bag of treats for our grands this morning, for them to find when they come home from school. I don't know what their plans are, but I think our costume days are over, and no one come to our door any more either. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteI loved Trick or Treating as a kid: the neighborhood was safe, and I could go all around the block, on both sides without a parent. Sigh, that was being a kid. I made a Power Ranger costume for my son AND his golden retriever. Never imagined that Power Rangers would still be popular. It snowed on Halloween once in KC, but the kid still went out. I LOVE those pumpkin carving knife kits that came out so the kids could still carve without parents getting worried. KC has a few areas where they do "Trunk or Treat." One big retirement campus has cars set up in their parking lot perimeter with trunks open inward to give out treats. The vendors for the retirement center set up there too. Neighborhood kids come from many blocks to Trunk or Treat. Some churches do that too. Some goofy traditions are still good for the kids. I can't believe your KC is in middle school! Oh Gosh!
