Paperwhite Covers

I bought my first Paperwhite in 2014 and loved it. It was lighter and less cumbersome than my original Kindle e-reader.

That Paperwhite was a Generation 2. I had to buy a cover for it which cost $38.99.

Would you believe that expensive Paperwhite cover is melting/crumbling away?

That's so irritating.

I bought a new Paperwhite Generation 10 a few weeks ago since my Generation 2 seemed to be slowing down a little.

Besides, I was going to pass down that Paperwhite Generation 2 to Art.

He had a Kindle Fire that died on him long ago.

My Paperwhite Generation 10 needed a cover too, but I didn't want to spend almost $40 from Amazon for something that would come apart again so I bought one for just $8.99 from Walmart!

So now I need another cover for the Paperwhite Generation 2 also since it's melting and falling apart, right?

Turns out they changed the size of the Paperwhites last year with the Generation 10s. The top picture has the Generation 10 on top of the Generation 2.

The Generation 10 is supposed to be a lot lighter. I could hardly tell the difference between the two.

Ah well.

I went back to the Walmart site and bought another cover from them for the Generation 2. Fingers crossed that it doesn't deteriorate too quickly. At least it's not $40.

POSTSCRIPT:  Aha! I see Amazon is now selling the cheaper covers too.

  1. I have a paperwhite too but it doesn't stay charged very long so I just get the books on my smart phone. That way I don't have to lug two things around everywhere I go. I actually prefer a real book and they don't cause my body's melatonin to be affected. I sleep much better if I give up the computer, the TV and the Kindle long before bedtime. Then I sleep better. Those thing emit a blue light that affects our sleep.

    1. Thank you for the reminder. I'm going to look for a blue light screen for my Paperwhite.

  2. I had a Nook and then a Kindle and now a Kindle fire. Hoping the third one holds up for more years. My cover looks great, but I should look into the photography site to see if I can add my own photos.

  3. I have a Kindle Fire with a lovely starry night cover that has held up very well. Maybe that could be because I rarely use it, but it looks nice.

  4. That's rather funny. From your heading I thought you were planting bulbs!
I remember my late mother phoned Sears one year. She'd noticed dad's smoking jacket was fraying on the sleeves. "How long have you had it, Ma'am?" she was asked. FIFTEEN YEARS! IT was a good family story over the years.

  5. Oh I know this story too well! I bought a Barnes & Noble Nook HD in 2012, and happily plunked down the $35.00 for a chocolate cover (with a denim blue interior). Had it for 4-5 years before it began falling apart.

Last year I stumbled across the exact same cover for sale on Ebay, new-in-box, for around 7-8.00. Wow! Hurried & ordered it. Then that same weekend I learned B&N had come out with a couple newer models of the Nook since that 2012 model, and since mine had stopped updating (old Android software), thought it was time to buy the newest one. Got it, love it--and the mint-in-box replacement cover for my 2012 Nook is still mint-in-box.

At least THIS time, I didn't buy one of B&N's overpriced covers for the new Nook--found a nice leather one on Amazon for 9.99 :)

    1. I guess we both had the same sort of problems. It'll be interesting to see how long this cover lasts.

  6. I've stopped using my noo9k....I should have bought the Kindle. We have a library one block up the hill, and I have hundreds of books right here.

  7. well I'm making finally the transition from dumb phone to a smart phone iPhone 7 probably...My old phone can text but barely and I have a new assignment in church as a secretary so decided that was a good excuse to upgrade-will have to pay $55/month service instead of $30. Will be interesting!

  8. I have a Gen 2 also and all is fine with it including the cover. However I was astounded to learn they are now up to Gen 10??? Yikes does time fly.

    1. So weird about the Fires. My son bought Art a replacement Fire and that one isn't working well either. I'm sticking to the Paperwhites.

  10. It's imperative to read all the letters and numbers on the box to match up the proper cover.

  12. LOL! I initially thought from your heading that you were going to cover up your paperwhite blooming flowers from cooler night weather. Too old I guess. I like paper magazines and books. Linda in Kansas

  13. My Kindle Paperwhite doesn't have a "generation", so it must be an original. I have had it quite a while. It was a gift, and the case I have for it was a gift too, a padded, zippered case with a strap to put your hand through. It's holding up just fine. If my Kindle starts acting up, I just shut it completely down and reboot it.

  14. I have a Kindle Fire that I only use for reading my Kindle books. It's worked well, but then again I keep it on airplane mode except when downloading books. Otherwise the battery drains incredibly fast. I might upgrade to a paperwhite. :-)

  15. Me too, I have a Kindle Fire. Don't use it much anymore though. Like Mage, I prefer a printed book, and for me the library is so close -- and fun to visit!
