Our Sunday paper recently had a big spread about Popeyes' "famous or infamous" chicken sandwich. There was a funny skit on the Trevor Noah's Daily Show a while ago about how crazy popular it was on the mainland. I wanted to try it, but it wasn't available in Hawaii back then.
We thought mom would like to try it once even though it's not healthy so we drove toward the location last week, but as we passed by the chicken chain the line of cars going to the drive-through stretched down the street blocking some traffic. It was incredible!
Therefore, we STILL haven't tried it and none of my friends have either. Have you tasted this wondrous sandwich? I'm awfully curious since someone actually got stabbed on the mainland for cutting in line to get one.
Art says there's a classic and that the one causing the commotion is the spicy one. Is this true? And is it really deserving of all the hype?

My daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter have texted me that they tried Popeye's spicy chicken sandwich over the weekend.
They were not incredibly impressed. There was probably too much hype expectation. My granddaughter, KC says it wasn't all that spicy. My daughter says she prefers Chick-fil-A. My son-in-law says he prefers Shake Shack. We don't have Chick-fil-A or Shake Shack in Hawaii, so I guess we'll have to try Popeyes' once the excitement dies down.

I cannot imagine it would measure up to anything you and yours provide at your house!

ReplyDeleteI have both a Popeyes and a Chick-fil-A near where I live. I want to try the chicken sandwiches from both to compare. I have driven by Popeyes when they haven't had a long line of cars but the times I was hungry and wanted to try, they had long car lines and long lines inside the restaurant so I didn't stay.

ReplyDeleteMy daughter and son-in-law tried the spicy one and said it was pretty good. They offered to get me one but I declined because I am trying to stay away from processed foods. Trying is the wimpy way rather than committing, but at least this time I was good.

DeleteOMG I remember cuz I worked on Iwilei Road and people parked in the empty lot next door. They had to walk for a few blocks. KMart was giving away free 5-lb rice on their grand opening....and you know us local people and rice! Anyway as we watched from the 3rd floor, people were parked hemajang and it ended up that they encircled a car trapped in the middle! So these local braddahs started LIFTING cars out of the way....BUT about 200 yard away that they couldn't see was an opening and the dude could have just driven out. But locals sometimes no can think yeah with all that machismo flying around. They did lift the car and dude got out. BB
DeleteToo funny! By the way, I was reading your comment while we were driving to Zippy's which is now open and Art got distracted as we discussed hemajang and he missed his turn. That's the first time we've heard the "hemajang" phrase. I looked it up in Urban Dictionary. What a terrific word! Good gosh! They lifted the cars!!!
DeleteI LOVE Popeyes, but I haven't tried the NEW sandwich. Maybe I'll give it a try soon. I am also a huge fan of Chick-fil-A. Their chicken sandwich is "to-die-for"! Jordyn always gets me one any time she's near Chick-fil-A. LOLL

ReplyDeleteI confess I have never eaten a fried chicken sandwich. Don't know if we have a Popeye's around here and the only Chick-fil-A around here is miles away. I wouldn't go there anyway, even if it was close.

DeleteWendy's spicy chicken sandwich is good. Haven't gone to any ChickFilA's since 2000 when they were "outed" for being against LGBTQ folks and I'm an ally. Haven't tried the Popeye's version, and goodness, Raising Cane and a local chicken place down the street certainly makes it seem like over-breaded flash fried chicken will be our downfall. Keep us posted. An old local restaurant, Stroud's in KC, has amazing pan-fried chicken. No, not necessarily healthier, but no lines if you have reservations. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteActually we almost never eat pan fried chicken. It's so bad for my blood glucose. However, with all the hype, I just wanted to try that Popeye chicken sandwich just once. Now you all have me curious about Raising Cane. I wonder if my kids know about it.
