When Art told me that his classmate had shared some COVID-19 information that would help you test for the disease as well as help prevent it, I was, of course quite interested. Everyone is interested in some kind of helpful test since testing in this country is sadly lacking.
When I went to my Zumba class I discovered that more friends had heard of this. Hmmmm...
This is what was sent to them:
I thought I'd check out Snopes to see if it was true. It's always good to check out information you get off of Facebook or whatever. There's so much misinformation out there.
Looking further I found this.
And then I found that it's been debunked by Stanford too!
All I can say is, I sure as heck hope our government starts getting their act together. It's not like they weren't warned.
POSTSCRIPT: Hawaii is now limiting activities of more than 50 people. We don’t have Zumba this week because of spring break and I doubt it will start up in a week. Tai chi is cancelled until next month. We’ll have to see. We now have 10 cases. Nine cases were brought in by traveling locals or tourists. We had our 1st community transmission yesterday confirmed.

"I got this from a friend of mine who’s brother is at the Stanford hospital board. This is their feedback for now on Corona virus:
The new Coronavirus may not show sign of infection for many days. How can one know if he/she is infected?By the time they have fever and/or cough and go to the hospital, the lung is usually 50% Fibrosis and it's too late. Taiwan experts provide a simple self-check that we can do every morning. Take a deep breath and hold your breath for more than 10 seconds. Ifyou complete it successfully without coughing, without discomfort, stiffness or tightness, etc., it proves there is no Fibrosis in the lungs, basically indicates no infection. In critical time, please self-check every morning in an environment with clean air.
Serious excellent advice by Japanese doctors treating COVID-19 cases:Everyone should ensure your mouth & throat are moist, never dry.Take a few sips of water every 15 minutes at least. Why?Hmmm... holding your breath?
Even if the virus gets into your mouth, drinking water or other liquids will washthem down through your throat and into the stomach.Once there, your stomach acid will kill all the virus. If you don't drink enough water more regularly, the virus can enter your windpipe and into the lungs. That's very dangerous. Please send and share this with family and friends.Take care everyone and may the world recover from this Coronavirus soon.”

other than keeping you from drowning, i can't think of why anyone would think holding one's breathe would do anything. maybe sometimes it works on hiccups. if holding our breathe to determine whether we have coronavirus is all it takes, i don't think the government would be in the trouble they are right now.
ReplyDeleteThanks for checking. It sounded somewhat possible on the surface.
ReplyDeleteDarn ... I held my breath for ten seconds, and I thought I was okay for a minute there.
ReplyDeleteHmmm; seems like the "hold-your-breath" test and drinking some water wouldn't hurt anything. Sooo, would people who snore (causing a dry mouth and throat,) and people who use CPAP breathing machines, (also causing a dry mouth and throat, even with an attached humidifier,) theoretically be at higher risk for catching the virus?
ReplyDeleteThe "hold-your-breath" test would definitely work on someone beginning a flare-up of asthma, as it's difficult to do the breathing test in an asthma doc's office without coughing during a flare-up. Coughing is one of the first signs that asthma is flaring.
Take care of each other. Linda in Kansas
I wondered about the CPAP thing too, strange world we are in now.
DeleteIt is very scary, we have to be careful of the information we receive.
ReplyDeleteThe good thing is that while neither would help diagnose or prevent at least they wouldn't cause any harm. It's when they try to sell us a miracle cure that I get a bit upset.
ReplyDeleteAll the quacks are coming out of the woodwork. Snopes is a great place to begin checking.
ReplyDeletelots of panic and rumors abounding, time to calm down and just take one day at a time...
ReplyDeleteYou just can't get this info from rumours. It really is awful. Good for you for checking.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised you get to go to zumba classes. All of that has been shut down here in our area.
ReplyDeleteI also was happy to learn my lungs are okay, and then finding out it has nothing to do with the virus. I too am wishing I could take a class like your Zumba. Everything here is closed down tight. :-(
ReplyDeleteI'm tired of all this hysteria.
ReplyDeleteMany of us still don't realize what the isolation will be like. I've been looking around today wondering what to do.
ReplyDeleteI read about the holding breath test, tried it, told Tom, and he immediately told me it was a hoax. So there you go. We're almost completely closed down now here in Washington State. We'll make necessary trips to the grocery store but that's about it. We are learning to slow down.
ReplyDeleteAll of this disruption is POSITIVE! We are fighting a war on disease and we will win in the end!
ReplyDeleteWe certainly are learning to be vigilant. I hope.
ReplyDeleteThank you for looking into that Kay. Everything is closing down here in northern Virginia also. I keep telling myself this too will pass. We are self-isolating and filling our days a little differently than we used to that always involved going outside, and no further than the mailbox. Looks like it is going to be a long haul.
ReplyDeleteI heard through the coconut wireless here that Hawaii will also be in shutdown in 3 days. Go shopping for non-essentials before that happens! I am going to buy my favorite rice from the Rice Factory tomorrow - they were closed today. I think Costco will still be open but the shopping malls will probably not be except for Longs.
ReplyDeleteI am scared!
ReplyDeleteI hope I am okay. No need any test for this virus :)
