We were talking to our daughter on Skype when we started to hear pinging in the distance. I wondered if someone was throwing pellets at their window. Tif got up to check outside and realized it must be hail. She asked if we wanted to hang on while she checked outside and we said yes.
What a shock! In the 35 years we lived in Chicago, we've NEVER EVER seen hail this big. We reminded Tif how we saw cars pock marked with hailstones in the University of Kansas parking lot when we went there for a college visit during her junior year in high school. We hoped her car was not damaged as well.
The following morning...
Yup! There was a cracked windshield and numerous dings all over the car. As if we weren't already upset about COVID-19, we sure didn't need this!

Wow! I have heard of golf ball sized hail, but I have never seen it before. Ouch.

ReplyDeleteOUCH, I would not want to be outside during something like that, It would be a scene from the movie Day After Tomorrow, not good. Windshield are fixable, human heads not so much with that size hail.

ReplyDeleteThat's a big owie on the windshield. Good they weren't driving in it. Everytime I hear hail, I wish I'd put an old thick blanket on my car. Just last week, we had a quick ice storm with squarish pellets instead of round hail. Seemed to be raining shave ice for about 10 minutes! But it did bounce off cars and surfaces. Linda in Kansas

ReplyDeleteYesterday morning, when I awoke, we did not have water. I never encountered that before. The toilet could only flush once, there was no water to wash my face or brush my teeth (I ended up using bottled water). It was so weird and terribly inconvenient. Evidently some water main break happened and took awhile to repair. A few hours later, water started trickling in and then back to full capacity. Whew! It felt like such a relief. Amazing what we take for granted until we don't have it.
VEry surprising to have hail this early in the season. Hail destruction can be major.
ReplyDeleteThat is huge hail. I remember once in Colorado being in a car during a hailstorm that had hail almost that size. We parked under an overpass but still had dents everywhere on the outside of the car. Hail that size would kill any people or animals caught in it. Yikes!
