Open Market

Farmers Markets are called Open Markets here in Hawaii. The Open Market we go to starts at 6:30. In winter, it's pretty darn dark.

This is what it looked like in January about three months ago. (I was going to post this much earlier but with COVID-19 happening, all the posts I'd had scheduled had to be moved.) You have to inspect the vegetables with a flashlight in winter. Even then, we'd come home with veggies that didn’t exactly look wonderful.

Still, I sure do miss those fruits and vegetables and the sellers we came to know. I miss seeing the people and talking to everyone as we looked, laughed and made our purchases. It feels like such a long time ago.

I miss that time.

  1. Sure is a beautiful photo Kay, and interesting backstory too. I need to see Hawaii for myself someday.

  2. The hardest part of this is not being able to just go where you want to. Last night I dreamed I was in a crowded restaurant! Who would have thought I'd be missing that?

  3. I am also missing the Farm markets. although not the crowds, I have to admit.

  5. Walmart just cancelled our delivery order with half hour notice, no explanation. We waited a week.

  6. They closed your farmer's markets? Did they close your grocery stores, too? Farmer's markets are essential here, both for the customer and the farmers.

    1. No, the supermarkets and all other "essential" stores are open for business as well as carry-out restaurants. I think they have some kind of farmers vegetable pick ups in Honolulu, but we'd rather not go out.

  7. Nice to see you all are hanging in there. Our farmers market will open later, but with a very different format. I'll try to get pictures when the time comes. :-)

  8. That really is a stunning picture but I can see where you would need a flashlight. Wish we had farmer's markets here but then I would have one more thing to miss.

  9. Yes indeed. It is like we are all in a holding pattern and missing our normal lives. Soon! We will get back to normal one of these days.

  10. Not sure how they're doing it, but a KC suburb, Overland Park, KS is still having Farmer's Markets, which are out in the open anyway. Maybe the stalls are placed farther apart. Only food items are allowed, not crafts or clothing booths. Linda in Kansas

  11. Love the photo! One of my favorite things to do is go to the Farmers Markets. It will be a while before we get to the next one I'm thinking. Good health to all of you over there Kay :)

  12. Beautiful photo, reminds me why getting up early is rewarding. Our open air market is not opening here. At least not before June but I'm not holding my breath...

  13. Some people enjoy the open markets. It's the highlight of the week. Me? Not so much. But then I'm an introvert!

  14. It's a challenge getting fresh veggies here, too.

  15. I doubt that our farmers markets will be starting up this spring, which will be a hardship on local farmers. I am still going to the once a week for fresh produce.

  16. It's hard to think how hard this has been on so many people. Our markets would have opened April 1st, but are shut down indefinitely.

  17. Yes, I missed the before times too. Hang in there and stay safe

  20. Your photo is beautiful, Kay. It would make a great calendar photo. I hope you don't have to miss out on your fresh vegetables too much longer. There's not much that compares to FRESH VEGGIES!

    Stay safe dear friend!

  21. The open market at Pearlridge is open every Saturday from 8:00 to 12:00. I understand it is very well organized to promote social distancing. I hope to go this weekend.
