Farmers Markets are called Open Markets here in Hawaii. The Open Market we go to starts at 6:30. In winter, it's pretty darn dark.
This is what it looked like in January about three months ago. (I was going to post this much earlier but with COVID-19 happening, all the posts I'd had scheduled had to be moved.) You have to inspect the vegetables with a flashlight in winter. Even then, we'd come home with veggies that didn’t exactly look wonderful.
Still, I sure do miss those fruits and vegetables and the sellers we came to know. I miss seeing the people and talking to everyone as we looked, laughed and made our purchases. It feels like such a long time ago.
I miss that time.

ReplyDeleteThe hardest part of this is not being able to just go where you want to. Last night I dreamed I was in a crowded restaurant! Who would have thought I'd be missing that?

DeleteWalmart just cancelled our delivery order with half hour notice, no explanation. We waited a week.
ReplyDeleteThey closed your farmer's markets? Did they close your grocery stores, too? Farmer's markets are essential here, both for the customer and the farmers.
ReplyDeleteNo, the supermarkets and all other "essential" stores are open for business as well as carry-out restaurants. I think they have some kind of farmers vegetable pick ups in Honolulu, but we'd rather not go out.

ReplyDeleteYes indeed. It is like we are all in a holding pattern and missing our normal lives. Soon! We will get back to normal one of these days.
ReplyDeleteNot sure how they're doing it, but a KC suburb, Overland Park, KS is still having Farmer's Markets, which are out in the open anyway. Maybe the stalls are placed farther apart. Only food items are allowed, not crafts or clothing booths. Linda in Kansas

ReplyDeleteBeautiful photo, reminds me why getting up early is rewarding. Our open air market is not opening here. At least not before June but I'm not holding my breath...

ReplyDeleteI doubt that our farmers markets will be starting up this spring, which will be a hardship on local farmers. I am still going to the once a week for fresh produce.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to think how hard this has been on so many people. Our markets would have opened April 1st, but are shut down indefinitely.

ReplyDeleteIt will be nice to get back into some of our old routines that we took for granted....went to walmart for groceries today trying to wear our face masks it was hot and uncomfortable wonder how our health workers do it...

The open market at Pearlridge is open every Saturday from 8:00 to 12:00. I understand it is very well organized to promote social distancing. I hope to go this weekend.
