Remember me saying a while ago how Art and I complement one another? I can't smell or taste, but he has an acute sense of both. I'm near sighted. He's far sighted. I'm better at spelling. Art? Spellcheck was a godsend for him. Hearing? I can hear very well. He has hearing aids.
Well... for several years now we've had a little problem that we kept dealing with in different ways.
The TV is in my office along with my desktop computer that has all my photos with which I write my blogs. We also don't have the same taste in TV shows. Yes, we both like to watch Trevor Noah, Bob ♥ Abishola, Young Sheldon, Mixed-ish and Magnum PI, but there's a bunch of science fiction or sports programs that he enjoys when I'm trying to work on a blog post.
I've used noise cancelling earbuds that work, but the (not long enough) cord gets in the way. Then there's the fact that since he can't hear as well (even with his hearing aids) he misses a bunch of the dialogue and often asks, "What did he say?"
So I had this bright idea!
Wireless headphones!
I found one on Amazon and asked my techie son-in-law, Ed if it would work with our (sort of old) TV.
Ed checked the model #, etc. and said it should work out so I ordered it.
Unfortunately, the directions weren't very explicit and Art had a difficult time figuring out how to make it work. I was ready to send the headphones back to Amazon. However, before I did that...
I texted Ed who walked us through the procedure.
We had to go to SETTINGS on the TV, down to SOUND and then SPEAKERS. If you chose TV Speakers, his headphone and the TV could be heard. If you chose AUDIO, only Art would hear the sound from the headphones.
Perfect!
How awesome is this?

ReplyDeleteI wish I could get my husband to agree to wear a pair, that would be a perfect solution for us. He's not to the stage where he'll admit that he can't hear though.

ReplyDeleteI bought a set of Sony headphones from Best Buy a few Christmases ago. Dennis would watch TV in bed when I'm trying to sleep. Even at the lowest setting on the TV, I can hear it enough to keep me awake. The headphones were a Godsend! Plus the added bonus, they were on sale!

ReplyDeleteHi Steve, We'd love a bigger TV. But we don't have a space for it. We'd have to give up our bookcases which I don't want to do because it's my office. On the other hand, we did buy a 60" TV for my mom. She's got the best TV in the house.

ReplyDeleteSennhauser is what David uses but he bought the more expensive one. He likes the phone over the ears not on the ear, because it is more comfortable.

ReplyDeleteOK, guide me through this, cuz I've worn 2 hearing aids since 7th grade. I've just gotten so tired of concentrating to hear when I'm at work or out of my apartment, that I enjoy the quiet. I take my hearing aids out when I get home.
ReplyDeleteI rarely turn up the volume on the TV anymore, I just read the closed captioning. (Art may want to try that. Even my grown kids like it cuz so many characters whisper or speak too fast.) I didn't know Art wore hearing aids!
So, does he have to wear his hearing aids AND the headset? Usually anything too close to the hearing aids make them do the feedback squealing.
If the headset worn without the hearing aids, then is the volume in the headset loud enough for him to hear?

No, Art does not use his hearing aids when he's got the headset on. He doesn't need to. He just turns up the volume on his headset. It's all very wonderful.

ReplyDeleteI can identify with Art in hearing the tv. That's why we use "closed caption" a lot. Fortunately Tom and I like most of the same programming, and when we don't the desk top computer is upstairs in our home office, well away from our big TV. I'm glad you found a solution. I would not want anything interfering with you wonderful compatibility.
ReplyDeleteI am not hard of hearing, but I watch much more tv than Gigi. She loves peace and quiet! Thus I have been using headphones for almost 30 years. It has helped prevent a lot of stress in our marriage.

ReplyDeleteMy hearing aids come with bluetooth ability and a device to transmit the sound. It is so much clearer that way, even if the volume is similar to amplifying the sound via normal transmission.
ReplyDeleteWe have that one, as well. He can use it while I listen to regular sound at the same time. It really helps!
ReplyDeleteBoth hubby and I have been using Sennheiser wireless headphones for our TV. It means I can listen to the same program as he does, but at different levels of sound (I need it louder). And if I want quiet and he wants to watch something, I don't hear it at all! We have two separate wireless headphones that are on the same charger at different times. Works great! :-)
